I believe it failed with injector problems last year whilst on a Bristol VSOE & the 67 basically towed the whole lot back. I understand that when the injectors were stripped out, nothing obvious was found wrong with them. I think the injectors started working again, but the train was towed back as a precaution.

There is a very good write up on the incident last year in the Southern Express, for those of you not members of the MNLPS here it is:

If Clan line is out of action for some time I wonder what loco will take her place on the VOSE?

Really sorry to hear about the problems with this magnificent locomotive. Both injectors failing and a plug dropping sounds to be a really scary occurence. Let us hope no damage has been done. Those who keep 35028 running do such a wonderful job and I can imagine their distress tonight.

Tim Robbins, the Chairman of the MNLPS has sent me a Press Release from the MNLPS. He goes on to write, "....If you think it would be helpful, please feel free to forward the Release to National Preservation – we much appreciate the expressions of concern that have been posted there..."

It probably makes sense for me to open a thread for 35028 in the General Steam Forum and post this there also.

    Press Release, (from MNLPS)

'MNLPS regrets that on a return trip from Oxford for VSOE on 21st May Clan Line suffered a serious malfunction resulting in the loss of a fusible plug and consequent need to drop the fire. After the ejected fire had been doused by the local fire brigade, the train was diesel-powered back to Victoria with Clan Line still attached. The loco and support coach were then returned to Stewarts Lane depot.

MNLPS is urgently investigating the cause, and until that is ascertained will refrain from speculation. Early indications are that the loco has not suffered any serious damage as a result of the incident.

The Society very much regrets the impact to the passengers on the VSOE Pullman, and on following service trains, and also to travellers who have booked for trips with 35028 in the immediate future.

We offer our apologies to our customers and will do all we can to keep an open approach to this serious incident and communicate accordingly.'

    Thanks Bryan

Credit to the crew if they were able to get the fire out quickly to prevent any serious damage to the fire box.

Reading between the lines I guess Saturday will be off, even if they find the problem I doubt there will be time for a test run. The most important thing is to get this wonderful machine back on track when the time is right.

So what locxomotives might be able to run to York at short notice? I'd like to see 30777.

unlikely to be 30777 as it's only vac and it's a dbs tour who only use air braked loco's, 44871 is down south so will it be that, as not much else is free that day?

Sad news about the mighty Clan Line. Hopefully the old girl didn't suffer any damage. The wonderful follks of the MNLPS will see she is alright though.

Be difficult to path a 60MPH loco along the ECML at short notice i'd say, stranger things have happened however.

Maybe arrange the tour at a later date when 35028 is able to do the job. Thats all speculation that 35028 wont be available next week.

Very sorry to hear the unfortunate news regarding clan line on saturday.

Will have been a very nerveracking few mins for the crew on footplate, but hopefully their actions will have prevented major damage. I wish the MNLPS all the best support similar to comments posted by others already.

If she cant make york and with next weeks trip less than a week away, would the duke be able to take 35028's place. Only a suggestion as i dont know if she is on roster at ELR?

    Cheers
