Welsh Highland Railway services services were extended from Hafod y Llyn to Pont Croesor yesterday, when Hafod y Llyn halt was closed. There are a few pictures at http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=21663&id=100000037675773&l=51fbca36b9 and a video, not mine, at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=996VPNO8yPo.

    Great news!

Just before that new station and from near the road is a great shot with Cnicht, (The Welsh Matterhorn), and Moelwyn Mawr and Moelwyn Mawr as a fine backdrop. Gonna have to get back to them thar mountains soon...........

And for the railway, Porthmadog is not far off now.

There are good panoramas both of the train and from the train on the new section, and you can play 'spot the osprey' too.

I guess the West Somerset Railway are taking a red pen to all their promo material at the moment?

It seems that the west Somerset changed the material already, as i would expect from such a well run railway. They are now one of the longest heritage railway in the UK.

  6. Delighted for WHR - excellent news. Not quite sure if the recent extension quite trumps the WSR yet. Perhaps someone could provide the current operational length of the WHR? Assuming we are discussing mileage for passenger trains?

Passenger trains now operate between Caernarfon and Pont Croesor (in advance of the official opening on Wednesday) - a distance of 22.2 miles / 35.7 km

  8. Thanks Roger. A pedantic soul would suggest the WSR still has the "title" (just) with 22miles 53chains in use for passenger and freight trains. But not for much longer it would seem.

It should be pointed out before anyone starts reading too much into that this was a draft press release, not intended for publication.

In less controversial news, here's a vid of the opening of the line to Pont Croesor and the halt at Nantmor (dedicated to Ben Fisher).

Perhaps it shouldn't have been published on THE greatest 'news' websites on the subject then!!! Lol ;-)

...well it now seems the statement was e-mailed to Barrie by James Hewett himself. I dont know whether that was influenced by its leaking or not.

Err can we get back on track (no pun intended) here?
How long is the run now in the terms of time?
I need to work out what time I need to leave home to do it.

It takes a long time to get to Edinburgh and back from Kings Cross, but you're not obliged to do the whole round trip every time. There are intermediate stations, you know.

How may trains are proposed to opperate (at any one time) on a peak service day when services are extended to Port? At the moment it seams to be 2 giving a 2+ hourly service which seems a long while if you miss one!!!

    Regards
    Will

Depends on the time of the season. Two hours is about right for a stroll round Beddgelert, a pint and a pie and a visit to the dead dog. And if you can walk up and down Snowdon from Rhyd Ddu or Snowdon Ranger in less than two hours, remind me not to get into a fight with you.
