Thanks Mark, 47 with no bridge restriction I assume, I guess they can't push it to hard as I suspect water must be a bit tight for the long run to Taunton. Glad that the crews are still up for a good run a FB, one of my fav bits of the day. See you next week.

    Hi FC,

Hope to get down to see 6024 Sunday, did'nt get chance to see her (him) on the Torbays last year.

Unfortunatly I got to Dawlish to find a diesel instead.

So fingers crossed for Sunday's run.

  10. Hi Mike M

We'll be there! You going to be at Dawlish again? Which platform?

Lovely pics and video, Steve and Jon, many thanks. I will definitely take that trip this year, either next Sunday or one of the early August ones. Depends on how next Sunday's weather forecast looks by midweek.....

Shock horror, I've booked myself onto next Sunday's trip. Be nice to have a saunter down to Bristol Saturday after work and a wander down the harbour, couple of pints and then trip on the Sunday. Shame I'll be charging back up to London Sunday night for work on Monday...

It was good to be travel on the TE again yesterday, these trains really are the best you can get for a day out with mainline steam. Many thanks to the wonderful on-train team and especially thanks from Michael (you ladies know what for, he was very surprised and grateful).

Concerning performance it was great to see 6024 back on good form. Looking at the return journey first Mr Burns soon had 6024 working hard on the climb of Torre bank, then the run along the sea wall hindered by a stopper, which I understand will be the norm on this path. The compensation is a clear run at Whiteball and much much better path Tauton to Bristol, well worth the trade in my mind.

Whiteball summit was cleared at 50.5mph in 21m 35s, the fastest I have recorded on a Torbay Express, although of course most runs had the bridge restriction in place which has now gone. 32m 20s to Taunton is also the fastest TE run I have timed. The speed at Whiteball would have been higher if the loco had not been shut-off about ¼ mile before the summit.

We left Taunton early and a good run to W-S-M but nothing spectacular. We also left W-S-M early and this was a mistake as we were put into the loop at Yatton to allow a Voyager to pass. This spoiled the crews plans for Flax Bourton as we sat in the loop blowing-off. Never the less a speed into the tunnel of 65 mph was creditable in the circumstances. We arrive a little over 3 early so the moral of the story is wait at Taunton for booked time (and at W-S-M) and you should get a good run and you probably will still be 3 early!.

Turning now to the morning, after a delayed departure we managed a rare even-time run W-S-M to Taunton, recovering a full 7 minutes on the schedule.

After a shortened water stop we left Taunton on-time and 6024 proceeded to produce the fastest time to Whiteball tunnel with an 11 coach train that I have recorded (from a standing start at Taunton), bettering 60163’s effort on 9th August last year by 4 seconds. On that occasion 60163 did better to the final summit (MP174) by 5 seconds but it was great to see 6024 once again putting in the kind of performance that it is capable of.

Running on the sea wall was brisk as far as the approaches of Newton Abbot but then constrained by signal checks.

All in all a splendid day. The weather was even kind to us and we had an excellent afternoon on Goodrington beach.

Once again thanks to all the DBS / 6024 crews, and the TE on-train team.

  19. Thanks for your report No 7. We enjoyed our run too. Now looking forward to this Sunday, although (just personal preference ;-)) I prefer a fast run along the seawall on the return! lol
