Do we know if 7827 will be in steam at Didcot?

With 7827 now at Didcot for a week or so, which of the 2-8-0's are in steam at the moment? Thinking of getting a couple of days there this week.

    7827 @ Didcot Railway Centre

Took a day out of the office to track down "our missing loco". As previously advised, Lydham Manor is officially "on the run" - however, I think I may have found her, albeit in very unfamiliar surroundings!!

She looks right at home there in amongst all those proper GWR engines, with a bit of luck she'll be back soon though

Friend of mine saw her going up Telegraph hill the other day. (I know GW locos are good hill climbers, but 7827 was on a low loader this time!!)

Interesting. I am surprised the 42 required assistance....

I was at the GWR in Cheltenham the other week - they tend to run a diesel and steam loco on the same train - pointless if you ask me as the line is pretty flat. Maybe cost effective to hitch one to the other for a trip back to Paignton.... agree the 42 should be fine with the weight and the speed travelled.

    anyone in the know?

Due to the physical size of the site at Paignton the run round loop is only 7 coachs. Any more than 7 and we have to Shunt release with another engine. However, any more than 12 (i think) and we can not even get a shunter out of the shed. Therefore for 13 coachs we send the 25 too. That way we can shunt release at Paignton.

Also, at Kingswear when we stop on the clearance point for the run round then the back of the train is fowl of the Marina level crossing. We can run round, but we would have to go straight round and push in to clear the crossing, this is likely to take a good 15 minutes, minimum, and the platform by this point is very busy with passengers trying to get on. On a curved platform with hundreds of people on the platform this would be madness.

So the train is double headed down, the steam engine cuts off just short of Kingswear and runs into the bay platform, the 25 then takes the train on into the main platform. Then just before departure time the steam goes up to the front, then the two engines are in the right place for arrival at Paignton.

Back at Paignton we empty the train, split the train so the steam is left with 7 and the 25 with 6 coachs. The 25 takes the 6 away to the siding, and then the steam pushs back to the clearing point and goes for water, the 25 goes back in the shed, the steam runs round and off they go.

    Simples!

GWSR line is severed at Gotherington by a land slip with only a loop at Winchcombe . That's why they are T&T

Ah! Thanks for clearing that up. How are they getting along with clearing up the landslip - suspect it will take a while for the surrounding land to made safe again?
