Reading this thread seems more like a playground squabble than an honest debate and both sides are overly guilty of some frankly quite childish comments with regard to their preferred colour for this engine

We are fortunate that we have 4 8F's in traffic , 2 in BR Livery , one LMS Black and 8624 and therein lies the crux . We have a choice and can vote with our wallets . If you like 8624 as it is then spend your money at the CVR , if you don't then support WCRC, GWSR and the GCR instead

What about 48624 being the first passenger train up the Cauldon line on the November steam gala. Who would mind if it were red or black I'd be on it for sure. Heres hoping.

Now that would be something. Either that the duke or 5199, in some ways you feel like 5199 deserves it as its been a really good loco on the line all through the start of this year, and most of last. But the 8f will be brilliant if it does. I have found pictures in a photo album at my parents house of the last loco to go up that line, (top and tailed 37's) and a video as well.

Don't let them grind you down... If you fancy adjusting the LMS livery into 'Mech Navvies', as per the austerity at Blaenavon, I'd be happy to help! :D

And one day you might have the wisdom and maturity to contribute something worthwhile to the preservation scene - but I'm not holding my breath.

Enjoy you immature omniscience - I can assure that it does not last forever.

I would say that working on the restoration of 48624 is an excellent contribution.

It was, until they paited it in the worng colours! (wink wink) As long as the locos running and in good shape than the colour its painted in is of little importance, paint can beremoved and painted over remember.

Spring 2010 edition of The Knotty states that it should be going into back and with photo charters already prebooked it should prove a popular addition.

Well there is always the Wren model for those that like red 8Fs!

I don't often agree with Frank but I do think many forget what preservation is all about - preserving the past for future generations in an authenthic manner.

There is nothing more authenthic than a BR Black 8F trundling down the fantastic Churnet Valley on a long mixed freight or a rake of MK1s on an Alton Towers adex. I will certainly be making the 150 mile journey to see that and contribute to the railways funds.

I'm on the owners' side here, they've done the hard graft and the money-raising. And as pointed out, it isn't as if it's the only one, or as if there aren't any to see in black.

Plus I like it in red, long may it remain, hopefully I'll get to see it that way :)

    Just like to add......my thoughts
Yesterday I spent my time as the booked cleaner on 8624
    Fired three round trips
it rides well and is very free steaming I found her thanks to excellent coal very responive to the shovel
Bashed my hand on the front coulpling holder and trapped my fingers in the doors ( never did it on 44806 ?) Oooowch!
Otherwise another perfect day for me on the CVR
Must mention Kev and Phil, Driver and Fireman thanks for a good day
This loco is a credit to the guys who have restored her
Thanks for all your hard work, dedication with your persistance another one of the 213 that left Barry has returned to steam

The colour.....right now ......doesn't really matter

    5972, 34027, 35005, 46100, 47298, 47327 or 357, 48624, 53808, 60103, 69023, 80135 have all had non-authentic liveries. Other than 46100's pink, I am not bothered. They have all given or are giving pleasure to a lot of people.

Disappointing if it really is going into black so soon but the owners' prerogative nonetheless.

At the end of the day, the only truly authentic livery is the one given to it on manufacture in the works. So post nationalisation all steam locos manufactured before the late 40's carried, to the purist, non authentic liveries. Restoration is about restoring to original standards.

There is a spectrum of opinion amongst people on here. The purists like TBird Frank are completely entitled to their opinion and we should respect that. We can banter and have a laugh about it, but that is all it should be. Those of a more liberal opinion are equally entitled to their views and would appreciate a rainbow of colours.

The people who really matter with any individual loco are those who put time and money into the prurchase and repairs to that loco resulting in a return to steam and a useful existence again. They give the joy of being able to ride and see preserved steam in the UK. Respect them above all.

Do the people who refuse to point their cameras at engines because they're not in authentic liveries also refuse if they are in authentic liveries but pulling trains of blood and custard or chocolate and cream Mk1s with B4 commonwealth bogies and other such travesties? Do they refuse to photograph Bittern with its two tenders? I somehow doubt it. Authenticity is not something that can be recreated at all easily nowadays and anyone who expects everything to be truly authetic will have slim pickings!
