Speaking of pink engines, when is a black five not a black five...., i had a hornby black five in crimson lake once - how odd - but did any of the class actually carry this livery? in which case be nice to get the little crimson family together sometime.

Black 5's were black apart from one which carried experimental apple green in 1948

They are exactly what it says on the tin !

Short extract from John F Clay in "The Stanier Black Fives" :
"In early BR days 44762 was painted in SR green, 44763 in LNER green, and 44764 in GWR green. These engines were paraded for inspection, but at the last minute Mr Riddles, who was faithful to his early LNWR training, produced 45225 resplendent in LNWR lined black and this was the livery that carried the day."

In preservation 44932 has carried lined BR green and another, I forget which, carried Furness Railway red.

    Re: 6100 Royal Scot..Progress 2010.

My memory of said model was that "dirty pink" was nearer to it than "Crimson lake" - unfortunately, both the early Duchesses and later Dukes (Unrebuilt Patriots) were the same - molded in too light a plastic and then matt varnished to make them look even lighter.

The limited edition of 6100 based on the new Royal Scot and issued a couple of years ago, although painted, suffered from a similar but lesser problem, but in this case turned out to be surprisingly like the real thing.....

A real work-a-day Black 5 should be so encrusted with dirt and grime that it is impossible to determine what it's colour it is. IMHO.

And, oh, I clicked onto this thread to find out about 46100, and look what I've found! LOL!

Just thinking out loud; 6100 made its return to steam at the WSR in Oct 2008 right? So I assume the boiler must have been completed mid 2008. Does this now mean the boiler is 2 years into its "ticket" or is there a chance the "ticket" can be started a-fresh.

(I am aware that the idea of ten year boiler life is a flexible notion and use the word ticket as a loose term in regard to how long the boiler has left re insurance etc.....)

Dought it, unless they lift it, do a full de tube of the superheaters then hydrallic it i dont think they would be able to get a new ticket without lifting the boiler , unless someone can tell me differently , so by the time she does , if she does go mainline will only have about 7 years left on her ticket i understand that she has now passed into the royal scot trusts hands now, and that David Ward has now left bressingham, umm did he go, or was he pushed?

It wouldn't surprise me if Ward was offered the choice of resigning or being booted out. Hopefully his replacement won't take anything to Southall for 'restoration'.

And I guess the next question will be, now that Ward has gone will we see Royal Scot run in it's correct livery/identity?

lets hope so as long as he hasnt wormed his way into the new owning trust. when you think of what it has cost and the time it has taken, and its still not ready it makes you question why do people bother ,had bressingham had a crystal ball they would have restored another smaller in engine in house like the B4 or something and not even looked at 6100

It was at the SSG in March 2009 actually, but mid-2008 for the start of the ticket is probably not far off.

6100's boiler was steam tested the same week as 46115's was.. back in January 2008 (according to Steam Railway).

There was a quote in the same article from Southall saying "West Coast would probably beat us to it" referring to which scot would go mainline first... looking back that was quite some quote.

And the two Scots have gone on to vastly different fortunes.

and that my friend has got to be the understatement of the century , it would well be january 2011 before she gets out on the main line i just hope that she turns out to be reliable this is one engine that we dont want to see fail on the mainline early into its ticket, because then the same old questions will crop up once more concerning the restoration
