That would be a superb idea and without wishing to start a livery debate, it would be great if Stowe could be outshopped in 1950's lined black livery. For the reason being that Stowe is unique engine out of the three preserved Schools locos' as it's the only one that could authentically carry this livery. Repton in BR green, Cheltenham in Malachite and Stowe in lined black would be an awesome line-up.

Great News, re: 925, will be great to see her in action at the MHR and maybe elsewhere, when overhauled.

Regarding the axles failing a U/T test in the past, it is possible that a result that was initially thought of as a failure, was in fact just a rogue reading.

Such a thing occured with 34016, during its last overhaul. Readings where taken and it was deemed that the axles had flaws, so it swapped wheelsets with 35009, whilst that loco was still at Swindon.

Ian Riley posted sometime back on this forum that he had the original 34016 wheelsets tested again and they where passed as fine. Could such a descrepancy have occured with 925.?

I also seem to recall him mentioning something about machining marks giving the void result, in the first instance, that more modern testing techniques had disproved subsequently.

Ultrasonics is a wonderfully subjective method of testing, especially when it comes to long shafts/axles from the ends. If I was given a bad test result I'd need convincing by an independent repeat at the least. I well remember back in my NCB days, a winder drumshaft failing an ultrasonics inspection and it being replaced at the then enormous cost of £35,000. The condemned shaft was then sectioned at the supposed position of the flaw to reveal .....nothing.
It's dead easy to condemn an axle. It's a brave person who disagrees.

Thanks Steve, we needed to be sure before this was taken any further, hence the new test.

Anthony- was the test done just so that she could travel towed to eastleigh , or are there other plans afoot? i assume that there is road access from york nrm , or does anything that has to be moved out have to undergo an u/t test

We needed to know that she was fit to move by rail over the York carriage works site so that she could be loaded from there.

thanks anthony for that, i thought that it might have been because she was going to Eastleigh by rail diesel towed with connecting rods off but now its going by road, what sort of state is she in ? i know she had some work done so it could steam at rainhill but i would assume she will need a lot of work

    Anthony,
Any plans for main line working or will the overhaul be to heritage line standards only?

33001 would be very, very nice on the MHR but no, it's not a NRM engine. It is yet to steam in preservation and is another long term restoration.

33001 spent nearly 30 years on the Bluebell, many of them in working order.

Eh? 33001 yet to steam in preservation and not an NRM engine? If we're talking 33001 the Bulleid Q1 then it is most certainly an NRM loco and has had two periods of running at the Bluebell.

Sorry I seemed to have confused you all! What I meant was the other loco coming to the MHR is not a NRM loco and is a long term restoration.
