OK, OK! You've pricked my conscience again, a (small) cheque is in the post to 82045!

Thank you Kinghambranch, as the saying goes "Every little helps". We have some large, expensive wheels to cast! If 10,000 people can be persuaded to give just £10 to 82045, the wheels are "in the bag". Go on - you know it makes sense!

Bearing in mind that I am a mere woman and until a few years` ago didn`t know a "Pacific" from "Thomas the Tank"......... what is a 91xxx ?

I can tell you that 82045`s drivers are 5` 3" in diameter and have 17 spokes, unusual, as most BR Standards in similar power classification have 16 spokes. All 82045`s patterns may be made available by arrangement with the Trust once we have finished with them.

    A figment of his imagination.

WD 2-8-0s were numbered 90000-90732, 2-10-0s were numbered 90750-90774, and the 9Fs were numbered 92000-92250. So you see there is a gap in the numbering scheme into which the "91xxx class" fits. So whatever it is it is a heavy freight locomotive, but what? A 2-8-0 class 8F based on a standard 5 boiler?

Imaginary in as much as they were never put into production, but on the drawing Board up until 1954, presumable the gap in the numbering sequence was left to accomodate them. Essentially a Brittania on a 2-8-2 wheel arrangement with 5' 3" Drivers.
The 2-10-0 9F design more of an out and out heavy freight engine took precedence, as the anticipated upgrade of freight rolling stock to enable more widespread 'fast fitted' looked unlikely to occur within the remaining life of BR Steam (correct prediction).
Like the 9F's production would have been at Crewe and Swindon...so swindon wheels a possibilty
As the 92xxx's proved to be truly versatile, surely the 91xxx(?) would have proved to be more so...
Note to self - must get round to getting one of your nice polo shirts...

Mr Oldford is a very talented man. Those large motion bracket patterns look fabulous and must have taken many hours.

Indeed he is and his achievements are even more remarkable when you consider that he works in the confines of a container, the width of which can be seen here, http://www.82045.org.uk/news/82045_news-may09.html . It is narrower than an average domestic kitchen! ( Incidentally, the horn block and horn guides are being cast as I write.)

Please, please help the Trust to keep up the splendid momentum of the past twelve months, if you can help in any way contact details are at www.82045.org.uk "How to Help". Remember, we can only do this with your contributions however modest. Thanks!

Thanks for all the very kind comments. Believe me, as 82045MS posts, it isn't easy making big patterns in the space available. I had some fun with the driving wheel and other stuff on the SVR `-).

Readers might be interested to know each of the Motion Bracket Patterns are being made to be cast in a 3 piece moulding box. I.e a Cope and a Drag but separated with a Cheek http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheek_(casting)#Cheeks. Hence the main body of each pattern (a left and right handed mirrored pair) is being made in four major pieces. To ensure all details can be reproduced in the sand mould a further 5 loose pieces, one core-box and an odd-side (to simplify the moulder's job) are being produced for each of the two patterns.

All this effort for one of each but a boost for those future teams tackling 82046 and 77020!

The very latest news is that there will be a display stand for the 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust at this coming weekend's(24th and 25th July) Toy and Collectors' Fair and Swopmeet at Horsted Keynes field at the entrance to the marquee on The Bluebell railway. Southern enthusiasts and their friends can see some of the progress to date on this exciting project to build a new and very useful loco from scratch.

The Fair opens at 10.30am each day. There will be a supply of application forms and Severn Valley Railway literature at hand. Please pop along and have a chat.

The 82045 team will be at Bridgnorth this coming weekend for the "Peep Behind the Scenes" event. We will have our sales/publicity stand beside 82045`s chassis and welcome all to come and take a look, ask questions and hopefully join us in constructing this new locomotive. Engineering officer Tony Massau, publicity officer Chris Proudfoot and myself will be there all weekend and look forward to meeting members and anyone interested in the project.

    Regards Barbara

Many Thanks, its looking good. What are the plans for a perminant cover for the frames during the build, is long term shed space going to be allocated at SVR ?

I think there is a temporary cover available on-site to cover the frames, a sort of plastic-hoop greenhouse? I guess once it is a wheeled chassis then it should get shed/works space...hopefully so.

I guess we deal with that after the small matter of £125k for the wheels. Anyone out there won the Lottery?.....

As an aside, there has been much discussion on the NYMR forum about building new steam locomotives for when their existing fleet wears out. Lots of suggestions about favourite ex-LNER types to build, but in practice should the Heritage industry been concentrating on the economies of scale by looking at small batches of Standard types? Further 82xxx would suit many, but lines such as the NYMR probably need class 5 tender engines. Think about the economy of batch producing common parts, common parts between different Standard classes, and the availability of most working drawings.
Sorry, dont want to take the thread off in a different direction.

The latter part of your post sounds like you want to dictate to people how they should spend their money! There are two drivers for constructing new-builds, one being the potential need to provide replacements for the existing fleet - not a proven case because if the capability is there make new locos it is there to maintain the ones we already have, the process being no different to what was done at BR workshops where new boilers, wheels cylinders frames etc were provided as necessary - the second being the desire to recreate lost classes.

The "build new instead of repair" argument only has validity for a while in any event as the new builds will begin to wear out once they are used!

It will always be cheaper to repair than build new, because in a repair it isn't normally necessary to replace everything.

Thanks Pesmo, there is no cover for 82045 at present. During the first winter 08/09, a large tarpaulin did the job (just tied over) but in 2009 it was all thoroughly painted and as parts were added they too were painted. We have been pleasantly surprised at how well the paint has protected the chassis and it will all be painted again on completion. The hope of getting some space in the shed is always present but there are no promises. Wheeling the chassis will make matters a lot easier if we do get an opportunity to get inside. Just a small fund-raising matter first!!!

I don`t know what makes you say that! (assuming you mean 46118`s posting). He is not dictating where anyone should spend their money. Where did the argument " instead of repair" originate from? On some railways the existing locos are putting in a lot of hard work and new build is intended to work alongside them and give them a slightly more relaxed time of it.

46118 referred to the discussion on the NYMR forum, which was about whetherb it would be better to build new rather than repair, and as for the money aspect, it was his reference to the heritage industry concentrating its resources that prompted me to comment.

There a image of a standard 3 tank on the Maldon - Whitby line before NYMR days (82029?) and the tender engine version was alocated to the North East, so a new standard 3 would at least be "histoicaly" correct for the NYMR...
