It has been announced over on wnxx.com that 58016 has been successfully purchased for preservation by the Class 58 Loco Group.
    Congratulations to all concerned :).

    Great news.

Lets hope 58050 also enters preservation at some point.

Why shouldn't it? It's been placed on the appropriate lists for preservation once it becomes surplus to requirements - isn't it the last locomotive built at Doncaster?

Are there any sub and sub-sub classes we need the 1st one of each for too??? Lol Only joking, it makes a change from a 37 or 47!

The group concerned also mentioned that they failed in their bid to purchase a second loco which they required for spares. lets hope they can negotiate with the scrappie and get the bits they want.

Its the first of the class to be preserved. OK it won't be worked into the ground but it offers a more exciting prospect than yet another 37 or even another 56.

If they were astute they'd restore it to mainline than a preserved railway.. more chance of railtours.. but also as a freight locomotive once the market picks up..

"WHAT PEOPLE PRESERVE THINGS OTHER THAN STEAM ENGINES????????"

Honestly everytime a diesel is preserved comments like this crop up. Get over it.

Its a worthwhile cause and a class that deserves preserving, its going to a base at barrow hill that has been set aside for it since the class 58 groups formation.

Its got some pretty big names in the diesel movement as part of the group so I think that this is one that deffinately wont be sat idle. Gala requests, offers of mainline tours, spot hire work are all right up this locos street.

Good luck to the group, look forward to its debut

    yeh give them a chance!

There is a world outside steam preservation although some people have still got their head shoved too far up their own arse to realise this

Yes good luck to them and it will look right at home at Barrow Hill. Never a fan of the class (they replaced better engines and there always seemed more than 50 of them!) but at least one should be preserved. Only problem is it is air brake only so it will limit opportunities to go on tour (unless a translator loco is used..). Just need a rake of HAAs but as an alternative it will look good on the Churnets air braked vans ...

The issue of no Vac is diminishing all the time.

an awful lot of preserved railways these days can scrape together air or dual braked stock. There is also the option though expensive of hiring in suitable rolling stock.

With more and more risk assesments being completed for running with translator locomotives this also gives other options

im sure it wouldn't be over difficult to retrofit a vacuum brake should the owners wish! but as a previous thread stated not all railways have just vacuum rakes of coaches if an air brake set is available and just used with a diesel most of the time its amazing how clean they all stay too.
at the moment they are in a unique position as no one else has one so hope they can cash in on that factorand get it out and about im sure it will pull the enthusiasts into the galas as the first preserved egg timer!!! lol sorry only joking everything is worthy of preservation at some point otherwise our railways would be very boring!

On the contrary retrofitting Vac to 56s and 58's is impossible, its been looked at. There just physically isnt the space inside them.

A study was carried out under BR for fitting ETH to the 56's put it this way it didnt get very far

My hands up for a main line rail tour behind one of these. I went to the Doncaster Open Day in ( I think 1984) when they were building the very first of this class, frames were set for up to 58007 or 8.

fine preserve 58016 to run and fine 58050 for the NRM but lets not have a dozen or more of them mouldering away in sidings....there really are way to many diesels "preserved" many of which will never turn a wheel again.
