Steamy early morning at Crewe 3 July 2010

Three steam locos were scheduled to arrive at, and leave from, Crewe station between 6.30 and 9 am this morning. The latest mainline return of BR Class 8 Pacific No 71000 Duke of Gloucester began with its appearance on the new HF Railtours' first outing, a Cumbrian Coast Explorer to Carlisle, returning via the Settle and Carlisle. Shortly after the Duke headed north just after 7 am, the Black Rileys, Stanier Class 5 4-6-0s Nos 45407 and 44871 arrived from Bury, took water, and left southwards on the RTC's Central Wales Explorer. 8.50 am and at Crewe, steam was all over for the day.

Yes, 35469 was on the back of the train and was definitely working as the train left Crewe this morning - can't say whether the air-con was actually working in the coaches though.

A lovely evening for it tonight. Great to see 71000 back where she belongs.

I've uploaded a video shot from Birkett Common tunnel this evening, with the extra shot after Hellifield Station on the 'Part 4' DVD.

The air conditioning was working in all the coaches.

    Cracking bit of video that.

OK. Reckon I'm gonna have to get a run behind that one very soon. But it looks like she's heading down to fire risk country soon.

This x546x (sorry I can't bring myself to type out the full number of something that could be a box), is, presumably, a box?

If so it had gone by the time that superb video sequence I have just watched was filmed.

Did someone in the rear coach have a spray can that gets rid of boxes? Like fly and other pest killer sprays you use in the summer?

If so I want me some of that!

    It's not a box, it's a generator coach.

Why thank you. I have no knowledge of things that fit into boxes!

Nice shot Mickey, I was on the hillside overlooking the viaduct, the sound 71000 made pulling away from the restriction and up past you was great, video processing now.
I was a bit disappointed to learn at the last minute that she was not running back to Crewe, as I had two more locations lined up after Blackburn. :mmph:

Ember code does not seem to want to work so to back to the normal link method....

Thanks for all the videos and pics everyone, it's lovely to see her/him out on the main line looking and sounding superb.

I will definitely try and make it for the Bristol trip and if the weather forecast looks right will book one of the Torbay Express trips

It appears I was given some duff information on Saturday morning. I was told that 71000 was coming off at Blackburn and returning direct to Bury. Well according to a friend it passed the end of his garden with the train near Lostock Junc., shortly after 8.30pm indicating that the Blackburn water stop had been omitted. Without the water stop I doubt if I would have beaten it back to Hartford anyway.

I can assure you Ralph that 71000 DID come off at Blackburn, we arrived there at 8.27pm and left at 9.04pm behind a class 67. 71000 may have passed your friends garden just after 8.30pm but it would only have it's support coach behind it.
