Mr lewins change of heart could have something to do with TV money for a Victorian steam restoration project but could just be cynical.

So how much of these locos is actually original?

As an engineman myself, I'm intrigued by the comments about Palmerston offering a Victorian experience, and Prince not?

As much as you would expect on locomotives that are approaching their 150th birthday...

The most obvious differences between Victorian-style 'Palmerston' and 20thC improved 'Prince' relate to fuel used and cab size.

'Prince' is oil-fired and has an enlarged cab with increased headroom...

Whereas 'Palmerston' is coal-fired and has an original profile cab - suitable for Victorian scale engine crew. Which is why you'll see the engine driver sitting in the cab to drive the loco, while the fireman stands in the tender to shovel coal into the firebox...

For those who have followed the FR from the outset, I would hate to lose Prince in favour of the Pony. For many, the Alco is part of FR history now, and it is sad to see no plans for its re-instatement. If however, the Pony is to be rebuilt using money not available for other projects....great, let's have it

I'll buy the Alco instead if no-one wants her.

What is the TV money anyways...

    Going back on topic.

I read about this in the last society mag I had, also studied the parlous state of the poor engine at the Quirks weekend. Everything above the running plate is no more than scrap.

Can anyone comment on the physical differences in the engine frames and running gear as 'is' compared to how they would have been as an open cab beastie?

'Restored' to its open cab form, but as previously suggested with a superheated boiler and perhaps hidden modern accoutrements it would certainly be an interesting machine. Though probably of no use whatsoever for pulling service trains.

With Palmerston and Prince about there is little point in restoring it as is. Prince must be bigger than a 'Large England' anyway, and sadly out of proportion with the silly high cab.

If Welsh Pony got the restoration treatment before Mountaineer got an overhaul I think I'd cry.
