Stupid question, but is it Caldon Low or Cauldon Lowe ?

Looking at the OS Map the rly runs to Cauldon, but into Caldon Low Quarry. But then South of the quarry there appears to be another place called Cauldon Lowe though this doesn't appear to be near the rly.

Not a silly question... In good North Staffordshire fashion, there's several different spellings! In BR times it was referred to in all documents and timetables as CALDON LOW, but I understand Network Rail have been referring to it as CAULDON LOWE.

5199 blasting up that line ? im so there for that event...

Im confused as to how working would work for that event though, would trains be passing between two seperate railways or would the Cauldon line 'be considered' part of the CVR with all the LRO, Lineside rules etc, for the duration ?.

I was wondering how the event would be operated - where would trains bound for Cauldon Low(e) pass ones on the way back? The loop at Leek Brook Junction? Cheddleton if the loop there is open in time? Or all the way back to Consall? Obviously passing at Leek Brook would be preferred but presumably that will require some work - if only process work to create a section beyond it?
Is there anywhere on the line between Leek Brook and Cauldon Low(e) where a loop could be added in the future?

The Froghall - Cauldon Lowe line will be split up into 3 sections, Froghall - Consall, Consall - Leekbrook Junction and Leekbrook Junction - Cauldon Lowe. There will be 3 sets of coaches out on the line.

For all details and updates about the gala please see the thread that is in the gala and events section.

    Regards

    Chris

I've heard a number of similar questions like this, including comments on this website. A number of options for controlling trains over the sections Consall through Cheddleton to Leekbrook and Leekbrook to Cauldon Lowe are being considered. There is a bit of work to do at Leekbrook Junction. If anybody can help us obtain three sets of equipment for train-operated points for Leekbrook it would make life a whole lot easier. Currently other options are being considered, but train-operated points like those on the Paignton and Dartmouth would be preferred, but we cannot find any. Is there anybody out there can help us out with obtaining some please?

    Hi,
Some people have been asking about pictures of the line clearance at Leekbrook Junction/Cauldon Lowe Line, there is now a 'Fotopic' Site been set up for those who want to see the progress. If you want pictures added to it please Reply to the Thread or Email me at: 'frank_8642_2010@hotmail.co.uk'. The 'fotopic' site link "Moorlands & City Railways, Support The Railway To Open To Leek Facebook Group, fotopic site" http://mcrsphotos.fotopic.net/ . [IMG]

Does the railway have three operable sets of coaching stock? At this year's spring gala they had to use a DMU to complete a second set! Either way I'm excited for the gala. Five engines is a nice surprise given that they've got two regulars at the minute.

They have the 4Vep which would give a third set when added to the 2 from the Feb Gala. Tho surely that is more a question for the gala thread

Not really -- the CVR have suddenly found themselves with double the length of track. If it is to be used regularly, keeping the same intensity of service, they're basically going to need more stock and more engines. And more visitors to pay for them.

Also, it's all well and good having extra length of line, but a railway is more than just track; you need stations as well for the punters to get off and stretch their legs in order to attract said visitors. What are their plans for these?

btw, I'm not having a go at the CVR but amongst the enthusiasm for the expansion there are some difficult questions that I hope they find answers to.

Also, won't everything have to be passed by the HMRI or whoever it is these days?

Please remember the churnet doesnt own or have any say on what goes on with the line from leekbrook to cauldon. they are lucky enough to be able to use it. the line will eventually become use for stone trains when the line eventually gets re opened to stoke. so when that happens im sure they will get more restricted use of the line. yes they do need more coaching stock, and locos etc etc. and hopefully with the longer line people will be more interested. im sure when the line opens there will be a huge interest and influx of visitors who want to see something new. And all at £0 cost to the churnet valley railway. Then in hopefully another years or so if the line is re opened to stoke with mainline connection more people again will come to visit and see something new, again £0 cost to the churnet. then maybe tornado might visit and other mainline steam locos, and if the mcr gets its full plans done then there is the line to leek, the line down to alton. Again all at £0 cost to the churnet. So there not spending money on the track so i would have thought been able to spend the money on coaching stock, better facilities etc. i know the director of the mcr wants to build an engine shed at leekbrook junction. Perhaps they may re build the station there and a possible look around the shed on open days? there is the triangle to be put back in there as well which would be another good feature. Only time will tell if this will work BUT it has a huge potential so lets see how things go hope it can attract the passengers.

From the impression I was given I thought the CVR aim is to operate Leek - Alton Towers.
MCR though have turned up and want to reopen Stoke - Leekbrook - Caldon Low, and eventually operate a Stoke - Alton Towers service alongside CVR.
As part of MCRs reopening phases, they have invited CVR to run specials up the Cauldon branch for their gala in November. CVR though don't intend to operate up Caldon Low regularly, if I've understood correctly.

As for the ORR inspections, it does say in the Press Release for the Gala(s) subject to final inspection so these are obviously in hand.
