On a different note, during my last visit to the WHR, I noticed that the paint finish on No87 looks quite poor after such a short time. It also seems to have developed a 'purple haze'. Has anyone also noticed this or knows the reason why?

Yeah - the silver seems to have turned into a dark blue colour - must be the sea air at Caernarfon

The thing to note at the moment though is as K1 is out at the moment 87 is the only coal fired garratt and as coal is a lot cheaper than the oil equivalent 138 87 has been used more extensively. Just looking on the trains this week section 87 has being on quite a few days doing two trips a day or 92 miles a day. It therefore wouldn't surprise me if with the amount of use its getting the paint is wearing. K1 is hoped to back (from news feeds eg isengard) soon as it will take the pressure off 87. 109 would reduce the workload on 87 and K1 further but the small matter of more shed space will be needed by then.

Having spent some time cleaning no. 87 this week I feel qualified to comment. At close quarters the paint finish is excellent and is showing no sign of deteriorating so far. However, some people have mixed feelings about the colour, which does indeed have a purplish tinge to it in some lights. It is also true that in other lighting conditions, particularly after a hard day's dusting with fine char, it can be difficult to distinguish the colour from black.

WHR locos, like many others, commonly are cleaned with a mixture of engine oil and paraffin. However, given that both 87 and 138 have been recently painted, efforts are being made to shine them each morning with a spray-on wax polish. This does seem to need a good initial wash and then a sustained daily effort by all concerned.

My own feeling is that 87 is merely suffering a little in comparison with 138's wonderful crimson lake livery.

K1 needs Double heading with a diesel though, so really I think it's more expected to be a standby machine.

Since 87 was only out shopped this year I think it would be very disappointing if the paintwork was already deteriorating even if used most days. That is barelt 4 months running.

Out of interest how long would a decent paint job be exected to last? I would have thought at least five years and possibly ten subject to the odd touch up and revarnish.

Don't worry it's not deteriorating, it's just a crap colour.

I think its fantastic, all it needs now are the headlamps and 87 will look the bees knees.

Blanche was last painted in 1993. It was not varnished then and has not been varnished since. Long overdue for some attention in my opinion.

David Lloyd George was last painted in 1992, but had a major touch-up and re-varnish a couple of years ago.

Palmerston was last painted in 1995, but had a re-varnish about 10 years ago.

Some FR locos locos repainted since then are Prince 1999, Linda 2001, Mountaineer 1997 but all of these are out of traffic.

I agree with SillyBilly: It is a crap colour, and Linda will look awful in it.

The paint for 87 was mixed incorrectly, it should have been close to GER dark blue, but in fact it has a definate 'Cadbury' purple tone in some light. I have seen a side by side comparison of what should have been and what is, there is a noticeable difference. Having also cleaned 87 a number of times I feel the surface finish also has something odd about it, a sort of semi-matt appearance. That being said, whatever colour it is, it is a lot easier than the light aircraft grey to keep looking clean.

It will be a great shame if Linda is turned out in the same, slightly strange colour.

    Regards

    Peter

The finish on 87 seemed to me to have become matt as well as being Cadbury. Perhaps the RhE should seek sponsorship from them and name it after one of Cadbury's products.
I hope Linda will be black

The plan was to have it in, midnight blue, it would have looked allright. However something went wrong and it ended up looking a bit purple.

Cadbury loco's were actually maroon . Whether as a company a sponsorship deal is appropriate I don't know although the tagline moments of pure pleasure could easily apply to the WHR
