I see timings are available on UKSteam . See the timing clerks have lost the plot again ! 66 minutes for the 83 miles from Grantham water stop to York . She must be passed for 90mph and have a very light load !

You'll have a long wait if you got out for this on the 13th, it's running on Saturday the 14th. :)

Re: Tornado KX-York Friday 13th August

Indeed, a start to stop average of 75.45 mph for a loco limited to 75 mph is rather pushing it. Even it Tornado had warp speed acceleration and braking to 75 mph she still couldn't keep time.

But it would be possible with a decent load and a 90 mph limit. Fast start, good braking for the stop, and no checks. Assuming 60163 could do the start to stop bits in 20 mins for 20 miles, (but I don't know if she has to come out of a slow siding at Grantham), that would leave 63 miles in 46 minutes: an average of 82 mph. If it's 25 mins and miles to do the start to stop, then it's an 85 mph average for the 58 miles left.

If an unrebuilt Bulleid West Country, (34019), can do 23.3 miles, (sigs stop outside Woking), start to stop in 22 mins 34 seconds with a 500 ton train and a max of just 77 mph plus a slight check, then I'd back Tornado to do the first option, (20 miles/mins), even with a slow start out of a siding, (if that is what it is).

But I would be rather surprised if the 90 mph limit was finally introduced for the first run back after quite a long lay off for repairs.

Maybe a moderator could correct the thread title please.
The Tornado KX-York tour runs on Saturday 14th August, NOT Friday 13th.
The correct tour code is t0814a.
The booked load is 13 coaches.

There is a repeat run on Monday 16th August, with tour code t0816a

Well after weeks of LMS stuff around here it was great to see the Shap record breaker back on the ECML, and in full sun too.

Three even time runs on the way out and one on the way back.No high speed but very consistant running.
    Stevenage-Peterborough, 44:31 48.8 Miles
    Peterborough-Grantham,28:29 29+miles
Grantham-York,73:07 83 miles Schedule adjusted to 74 mins before the day.
    York-Claypole loop,68:03 73+miles
We just missed out on the Carlton-Peterborough leg and also the Peterborough-Stevenage leg.

Thanks Palace Gates for posting the section times . I see Tornado was allowed an extra 8 minutes for Grantham to York ,but 83 miles in 73 minutes is still very good ( 68.2mph average ) . I wonder if this is her best performance over such a distance given the load ? Looking forward to tomorrows run !

    Regards James

This is probably the fastest time over this section ever as the Selby diversion was was not opened when Steam finished in 1968.I did wonder what the old Coronation was booked from passing Grantham to passing York in the late 30's.

73 minutes for that distance is close to the fastest that could be done with a 75 mph limit and 505 tons behind the tender. That run to York looks to be a real classic. Timings are generally longer today, (but Grantham - York still very good), as I guess there will be some slow line running with a pathway harder to get M-F?

    Bryan,
The original booking for Saturday allowed for a clear run to York. When the adjusted timings were issued a crossover to the Leeds line was indicated to let the 10am from the Cross to pass between Colton and York.As it happened we stayed on the Main to York. The only impeadment was a signal check (single Yellow)approaching York to around 25mph before Holgate before the crossover.Probably lost about 30 seconds on the overall time.Maybe less.
    Regards
