Not sure where to put this post, sorry if its in the wrong place. Does anyone know the going price for a Stanier whistle and their availability? Is anyone making new reproductions? Also, I'm looking for some new pre-grouping and big four grease top cap badges. Does anyone know who carries them currently? I got my old ones from Longleat years ago, but I didn't see them for sale anymore on their website.

No, they only have BR badges, I'm in the market for pre-BR badges. Nice buttons though if I did Guards work or something. Thanks anyway

    Regards,

I suggest that you check the catalogues of the various railwayana auctions that are held, especially the internet and postal auctions, for badges.

I bought a hooter that came off a WD for £120 last year if that's any use to you.

Seem to recall that blowing across the top of an older style milk bottle (not the current 'dumpy' ones) gave a good impression of a Stanier hooter.

We had an railwayana auction in Crewe earlier this year, A genuine Stanier whistle off 6119 (from memory) with a full history sold for £120.

Having heard 44932's rather pathetic attempts at whistling/hooting today, :whistle:maybe they'd sell you that one cheap and put the money towards a good one (ex-GWR perhaps.....)

Quickly adds, I'm not knocking 44932, it's a lovely loco, I just wish it had a whistle worthy of it!

Stanier hooters come in two main variations - vertical mounting, on the smaller boilered locos, and horizontal from the larger locos. Typically you would pay around £120. It is difficult to match whistles to locos, despite the occasional catalogue description (funny how so many GW whistles are off Kings), so you might as well go for the ones without attribution. Some have "3 cyl" cast into the base, so it is fair to assume they are off Joobs etc.

I've got a stanier sounding whistle on my TE! Works well as long as we've got over 120psi, otherwise its very shrill and hurts your ears!

Doubtful. I'd say that this annotation means that the whistle has 3 chambers/notes.

If your theory was correct, you'd also be able to say that they come off Royal Scots and Patriots too.

A Hooter has only one chamber/note. Chime whistles have more than one.

I've got one just like it on the hearth in the lounge, only er indoors insists that it has to be cleaned regularly... Always a point of interest to visitors...
