    having seen Paul's shots , can't help but feel that Fort Bill First then Birkett may have been a good option

    That would've been some feat if starting out from Southern England! I wonder what the most epic fotting day out has been? I recall my father doing Leicester - Aberdeen and back for Blue Peter in the 90s, but even that's "only" an 850 mile round trip. Peter Doel used to do Teignmouth - S&C fairly regularly - a mere 700 miles. Matts trip must be on the limit of what could be done in a day! My total on Sunday was just over 600 miles; any further and I don't think I'd have enjoyed it without being able to share the driving. Going back to the original point, London - Loch Eilt and return via the S&C would only chalk up 1100 miles, so not much more than Matts effort, but a bit more non-motorway driving!
