It isn't the first as the j21 65033 was stored and some restoration was carried out in the shed prior to its move to beamish in the 1970's.

Last time I checked Springwell Bank Foot shed was an industrial shed... in fact it's a shed that's so old it pre-dates the concept of a 'main line' railway! So then it would seem that No. 69023 has worked in genuine industrial service before and is now making her second loan visit to an industrial shed! did the 20 or 25 have a similar pedigree?

Even ignoring that 69023 has a great pedigree, it's a cracking machine with an important place in North East history.

What? It was a privately owned loco on hire to ARC to haul stone trains. So why doesn't that count? It is just like the 14s on hire to AI. They look industrial to me!

Oh good, so we're agreed then, J72 qualifies!!! Anyway rest assured visitor number two has a 100 per cent industrial history... albeit a very varied one!

Did any J72s work along the Tanfield branch in BR days? I will bring the matt black paint! Or why not pretend it is a J71 and put a big No.12 on the tanks!

Don't worry about the funny mainline engine what about CP no.3? Why has she come off the scrap (well it is an NCB shed) line? Good NE end of steam engine which would be nice to see out, especially with wasp stripes!

Just to let the relevant people have a look at the moment... you know the usual, check the condition of the boiler etc... if results come back reasonably then who knows! It is understood that she was taken out of service at Glasshoughton in the 70s due to a burst tube alone so theoretically bar the platework she may be in relatively good fettle.

Plenty of far more appealing dark blue paint lined out in what looks like a cream has already been revealed mind and at least one of our number believes he has a reference to it having been turned out from Hawthorns in lined black. She is after all a 1923 built engine, mainline bods wet themselves about stuff that old!

Still a few places left on the only chances to ride behind the J72 other than at the gala and in a full North Eastern Railway train at that with food included in the price... check out the railways website at www.tanfield-railway.co.uk/special.html FIRST SPECIAL THIS SUNDAY EVENING

Essentially what we're looking at is a full North Eastern Railway designed train featuring the superb J72, the fantastic clerestory composite we have on loan from Beamish, the fully restored NER 5 compartment third from the 1870s No. 256 and former directors saloon No. 853.

Spend an evening with the North Eastern Railway!
