Thanks Martyn - I understand now how it works! (The original roofline does look better, though!)

I was told when I saw the engine at Porthmadoc that the roof profile had been changed to permit its use over the Ffestiniog. However, components that will restore the roof to its original LBR outline had been made and will be fitted when it goes off the FR.

    Regards

Yes, the roof of Gernedd Tunnel is too tight for the original profle - they had the same problem with ex-L&B coach 15 (FR 14) when that was restored in the 1960s, and had to be reprofiled. This photo shows the slots in the roof that will take the extra fittings - looks like they are removable rather than fold-downable

I am assuming Lyd is in BL having some tinkering done? Any idea when she'll be out and about again?

Just saw all the updates on the Yahoo group. Is it me, or is the cow-catcher on the front smaller? Doesn't seem big enough.

    Still looks stunning though!!!

There are some bits to go on the side but they hit FR platforms. You can tell this loco was designed for another railway.

Not particularly gutted, Lyd was out in the open on Sat as we passed BLodge, so saw it in it's current state, I have seen it progress over the years.
It will be an extra excuse to visit next year when it is fully painted and in service, plus the Pont Croesor - Port section will also be open.

    Andrew

I was not dissmissing Lyd in black and your pic shows the issues with original cab roof profile vs Garnedd Tunnel very clearly.

It was unlucky I missed Lyd in action and it would have been nice to have caught a glimpse during my visit, but it's not the end of the world.

    CB...

Would'nt it look nice, in black, with the early BR crest & a suitable BR(S) number! - even if only briefly!

Before I get shot down in flames surely that is what would have happened to the old L&B locos had the line survived beyond 1948?

B****y H***, Lyd is a very tight fit in Garnedd Tunnel! Do not put your head or anything else outside the cab profile!

Smart looker! I hope to see her again, when I've got a camera in my hands, sometime soon.

Hope she carries off a few prizes....

I would place good money on 'Lyd' carrying a (magnetic) BR 'cycling lion' at Launceston if she is still black in three weeks time....

So long as it doesn't end up in BR Blue with massive double-arrow logos, like they did to the VoR locos!

I wasn't too keen when I first heard it was going to be left black for a while, but it is growing on me - it's actually quite impressive.

    ...but only at one portal!

I was surprised to see how much clearance there was at one end, or is that just a trick of the light/foreshortening in the photos?
