You wouldn't dare sticking anything out of the cab profile on many of our engines going through those portals, I've heared stories of cab roof clenching=knuckle scraping on some stuff, once your inside it gets a little wider.

I held the camera out of one of the (four) sunroofs on the down journey and whipped it back in fast when I grazed my knuckles on the tunnel roof.

What a magnificent achievement! Another one of those which many experts said would never happen! Well done to the dreamers who made it all come true!
Do we have any idea what the level of interest in Lyd is? I can't make the Launceston dates but am free for the L&B dates. Are those in the know anticipating Tornado like levels of interest in Lyd's L&B visit? Does Woody Bay have the infrastructure to cope? Will I be stuck in Devonshire traffic queues for ever and a day? Am I being optimistic or pesimistic in asking these questions?

While Lyd will probably generate more interest among enthusiasts than previous FR new builds, its never going to enter the public conciousness in the same way a new mainline steam loco like Tornado will. Indeed, we may never see anything approaching the 'Tornado effect' ever again, only time will tell...

The 'Tornado effect' - failing at every opportunity?

And both LSR and the L&B will be pushing Lyd's visit. Why anyone would imagine they wouldn't is beyond me.

Whilst Lyd ( and its a terrific acheivement building and completing it) being at Woody Bay is a big event in history I have been at some of the equally important days at Woody Bay going back to opening ceremonys and you can get many hundreds to a 1000 people around the Railway and it is very packed there still seems to be space to move.

However many of the people I know, who have been at previous such events are not planning to make the trip and therfore will not be at Woody for this one. I suspect their numbers will be replaced by people who have no particular interest in the L&B but want to see the New Engine.

I would estimate 400 a day bad or dull weather and probably 600 -700 if its realy fine. The thing is with other events such as reopening the railway they were only one off's. Where as some will go to Launceston instead and sooner or later people can see or travel with Lyd back in north wales and probably on the L&B again in the future, sometime.

I hope it works out fine for whoever goes , and that it covers cost. You might get stuck in traffic jams but it will be the Highways digging up the A39 or the many other single line roads tat spread for miles around ND not the problems in getting to the Railway.

Pessimistic - compared to Tornado it doesn't matter so much how popular Lyd will be. It was fully funded (no loans or shares involved) by the people who wanted to see it built and the signs are it will be a useful medium powered loco for the railways where it will run. Great if it also becomes a popular attraction but that was not essential to the project.

LOL Andrew! That said, if Lyd can perform out-of-the-box as well Tornado did for its first 18 months, and even then only need precautionary repairs, i dont think anyone will be complaining... : D

And ... how does that compare with the original L&B locos? Eight coaches required double-heading, and I think the FR ruling gradient is steeper.

Any idea what the coaches weigh by comparison? Is the improvement just down to the highr boiler pressure, or does it highlight some of the other modern developments that have been incorporated. Are they expecting to try more than an 8-coach train?

    Sorry - too many questions!

Remember that the L&B ruling grade was a good bit steeper than that of the FR, maybe 1 in 50 compared to the Ffestiniog's 1 in 70 approx. A much better guide will be when Lyd has a go at the WHR's long stretches of 1 in 40.

Also bear in mind that what a loco can do under test is not the same as that which it can be expected to maintain, day-in day-out and in all weather conditions. K1 has taken eleven bogies up the WHR but is normally limited to seven.

That is a disgraceful comment from the FR Press Officer. If the same comment was made about any aspect of the FR you'd be jumping down people's throats about it. Shame on you.

LYD has just placed 9 carrs in the platform road at Harbour station. I am surmising that it will try and take 9 some distance up the line in the empty 14.45pm service slot?

We could always skip BR Blue and go for 'Ginster's black' livery as a 'might-have-been' had the L&B reached privatisation...

Yes it is. For example the monthly Cornwall tourism guide has Lyd on the front cover of the September issue.

I'm asuming that this is empty, if so, what would that equate to as loaded coaches?
