I am looking forward to this, looks like a super event. Planning to do 3 days walking on Exmoor, then a bit of rest and relaxation for 2 days on WSR's trains to recover :)

Does anybody know why D7017 has been withdrawn from this event?

Unfortunately on seeing this loco in WSR advertising, I booked (a rather expensive) ticket to Taunton to make a special visit to see it in action (along with the two other Hydraulics) on the Saturday, having never seen it running before due to living a long way away. Rather dissapointed to learn it will now be a 33 on instead...

  4. On 23 July, the owners, the DEPG, said it was running but since then they have withdrawn D7017 due to a problem with the engine oil. On 22 Aug they said "Please note D7017 will not be out." admitting "This has been incorrectly advertised elsewhere as being diagrammed." On 21 Aug, the DEPG website said "...the loco [D7017] will require an oil change before returning to service." Guess it's just one of those things...

The current diesel line-up on both days is D1010 and D1661, with D6566 on the Sat and D7523 on the Sun.

Thanks for the info, having several sulzer's "up north", it was the 14/35/52 fleet that drew us to the WSR. So as long as D1010 remains, we should have an excellent visit :)

Quick question - whilst trying to plan our day.

Is it possible (is there time?) to swap trains that pass at Blue Anchor, Williton & Crowcombe? It's been years since I visited and can't remember if crossings etc get blocked by long trains...

You should be able to cross at all those locations. Trains are usually held for those who want to change trains.

I've never had a problem, and since the hourly departure timetable was introduced, there is usually more time at the crossing points for those who want to change trains to do so.

I think you're safe at Williton and Blue Anchor, because signals stop trains in one direction (from Minehead at Williton, from Taunton at Blue Anchor) from getting onto the board crossing until the other train has entered the station, and in both cases the board crossing is next to a road crossing that the other train won't be allowed to block while stationary as it would upset the motorists. At Crowcombe, Minehead trains can't block the board crossing because the signal is well before, but there is no road crossing so a Taunton train could block it. But it never happens!

I've been coming to WSR galas for about 20 years, and the WSR people are well used to 'moves' between trains at intermediate stations. It is the friendliest of preserved lines and I'm sure that you'll have a great time.

Thanks for the various replies everyone.

Clearly (from the comments of the experienced) there are no problems swapping trains on this line and enjoying the gala action! Looking forward to revisiting one of preservation's greatest (and longest!) railways...

Just uploaded another clip from the The West Somerset GWR 175 The Penultimate Act Gala.

Just a bit of fun, I was hoping Nunney was the right way round and could not believe how much coal was on the tender!!!
