The A1 SLT could be missing out on a trick here. Put her in this livery for a year and name her Harlequins and get sponsorship from the rugby club of the same name, hey presto all the financial worries of the stay problems are solved.

If she’s going to change livery in to BR Express blue and in to Brunswick green. Maybe she could be renumbered in to a long lost member of her class. For a short period of time

Two years ago, I asked David Eliot and Mark Allatt if it would be possible sometime in the future, and even offered up the replica nameplates/numberplate I have. They didn't say an outright no, but said (and rightly so) the locomotive has to develop its profile more and more in its first few years.

I have 60130, Kestrel, in replica plates to recreate a little slice history (should Tornado go into blue anytime soon, and Mark - if you're reading this - you'd like to borrow them, free of charge).

Anyone wishing to she her run with a change of name could sponsor/donate money towards the running costs of the loco. One way to help pay the bank loan off a bit quicker.

:focus: Any chance we can get back on topic - any one visiting this "Tornado" thread must be wondering what's going on. maybe the Mods could set up a topic on the contribution of photters and move the relevant posts above?

Regarding changing the identity of 60163 to some of her sisters. Perhaps this could be done near the end of her first ten years in traffic. She could be allowed to get a bit grimy and they could get a fair bit of money for the trust from some charters?

The contribution of Photographers to Preservation

As requested this topic has been started (and can be found in the Heritage Railways & centres section as this is a wider subject than purely a steam one) to seperate the debate from the Tornado topic and the posts made there have been moved here - So the topic is the contribution of photographers to the preservation movment (financial and otherwise) - Discuss! - http://railways.national-preservati...contribution-of-Photographers-to-Preservation

This Friday is when Tornado 21st Century Steam is released. Sounds like a very interesting book. Might see if they get any at the Bluebell to get at Giants of Steam next week.

That's why I couldn't find it then! The advert I saw for it said it was released on the 1st October.

No sign of the new Tornado book in Haywards Heath.

Also the latest Steam Railway offers insight into the Doncaster P2 Locomotive Trust doing the other P2. The streamlined version.

They have the money to produce the frames and are looking at suppliers and intend to have them cut by the end of the year though they have no target date for completion and need £5million and as the name suggests they want to build it in Doncaster. It also says that both this Trust and and the A1 Trust have been in contact and could joint order parts. (Providing that the A1 Trust's feasibility Study is successful.

Reading the railway press there could be an issue with a P2 running on the main line. Would this be the same issue a 9F would encounter with the check rail on main line points/crossovers?

I've not seen any indication of the Doncaster P2 going mainline yet though I presume that's their plan but as you say there may be certain issues with points.

P3s were four coupled - not five. 48151 gets around on the network. Its 9Fs that seems to cause problems today.

It is the flangeless centre driving wheels of the 9F that are a concern, as I believe some check rails are now above running rail height.

    Regards,

    Dan

Where'd my post go? As I thought I'd said, the P2's had problems negotiating some curves due to poor side control from front pony truck. It was the same swing-link design that gave problems on the V2's which were subsequently modified. The P2's of course were rebuilt by Thompson (arrgh - wash my mouth out) instead of having the riding problems sorted out. Remember that the GWR (more mouth wash please) successfully operated large wheeled 4 coupled locos in the 47xx class. The truck issue will be examined as part of the A1 Trust feasibility study. No idea what the Doncaster folk have planned though.

THe V2s had the Gresley swing link truck and this was subsequently replaced by a one that (Ithink) was based on the Stanier 8F design, the LNER having built some of these engines at Doncaster and so presumably had the opportunity to study it. The V2s didn't have a problem with this design of pony truck so one would have thought it would go equally well on the P2.

Just my 2p worth. I find the whole P2 situation a bit bizarre. Why put (guessing) £8million into building two versions of the same loco, which was never really a success in either guise? And one of which will be pretty much indistiguishable in many people's eyes from Bittern and SNG, etc. And may not go mainline. I don't dispute the beauty of the original form, and think the A1SLT have got ti spot on to build that - always provided that it won't then go to waste running around at 25mph everywhere.

Come on guys, get your act together, build one (the original) and use the remaining money to deliver one of the railway's other missing locomotives, of which there are far too many.
