DSC00535.JPG I recently tried to list an "antique" carriage key, marked LNWR, a company which exsisted between 1846 and 1923. It was taken off eBay by eBay as it breaches the "Government and Transit Uniforms Policy". You are not allowed to list anything that has ever been owned by a transport company. I have argued with them over this, explainging that the LNWR went out of business nearly 80 years ago but they are having none of it.

Does this mean that no old timetables are to be sold on there? Or steam locos? I have bought countless railwayana items on eBay.
I understand that buying items of current railway company items is a bad thing, people wearing uniforms to get into secure places or staff of companies selling off issue kit, but please!?!?

On a happier note, does anybody want to buy an LNWR carriage key? It is marked "L.&N.W.R.Co" and the makers from Warrington is stamped on the other side. PM me if you are interested, £10 all in.

I believe they have a problem with any sort of key; carriage keys, diesel loco desk keys etc. I have recently sold a number of other items with no problem.

I have never used Ebay UK, but this happened to me with Ebay France a year or so ago. I tried to sell some aluminium loco number plates, bought legally with receipt from the SNCF in the 1970s, and they were taken off for exactly the same reason. This seemed to last for about a year, after that, number plates etc were allowed again. I tried to argue at the time but they would not listen. I could imagine the reason for barring uniforms, but a cast number 14132 bolted to the side of my car will fool no one into thinking I work for the SNCF.
At the moment things on Ebay France are back to normal. I don't know what happened there.
Throughout this time, Ebay Germany had and still has a very active loco number plate section, plus all sorts of other railway stuff under the equipment (Ausruestung) section.

They take issue with the selling of Railway keys, and quite rightly. Most of these keys sold on eBay are still in use on the big railway, and those 'antique' would be very useful to a burglar wishing to break into a Heritage Railway Carriage.

Anybody who wants to break into a railway carriage will in the mostpart not buy a vintage carriage key. From my experience the usual weapon of choice for thieves is a screwdriver or brick!

Once Ebay decides something you'll find the nearest brick wall responds more sympathetically to banging your head on it, than Ebay will ever to someone trying to make them see sense.
