    Hi All

I have some photos of a locomotive called Carbon at Burnley in the 1960's
which show it fitted with a normal chimney in 1964, then in 1966 with a
Giesl ejector, i have been trying to find any info about this loco, but to
no avail, can anyone give any further info on this loco

I have a vague recollection of a loco named "Carbon" being listed as preserved, perhaps in one of the ARPS yearbooks - was there more than one loco with this name?

The patent for the ejector was always jealously guarded, however with so much water under the bridge since the design was created, you might be able to 'roll your own' here in the UK. It does raise the question as to why you would want to use one in the first place - if you were wanting to improve a locomotive then a Lempor is much better. Schoeller-Bleckmann used to be the manufacturers of the 'Giesel' ejector, they were based in Vienna.

I think the patents on the Giesl ejector have probably run out in 2001. I did look up some of the sites re the Lempor and started to wonder if it would fit into the British loading gauge for one of the larger engines, say an 8P which produce so much gas and vapour.

You would have to go for a twin ejector system, given the limitations on height caused by the loading gauge, particularly if you had a class 8 in mind and you wanted a fully optimised system. However it could be that a single ejector could provide a solution to the 4472 question, giving sufficiently improved steaming and performance but allowing for the retention of the single chimney appearance. Getting back to a fully developed application installed on an 8P, I would like to see an A4 fitted since the Lempor is held to offer significant improvement over the Kylchap types. Just think of all that performance testing!

No matter whether it would improve the performance of an A4, it would dramatically change the appearance of the engine, as it would any other type. I shudder to think of the posts it would generate!

It doesn't need to change the appearance; from ground level it is difficult to tell that the world's fastest serviceable steam loco, DR 02 0201, is fitted with a Giesl. There is no reason why the ejector could not be designed to fit into the current chimney casing of an A4, so that you would need to be on an overbridge to see the slot. However, there is the sound (aah, reminiscences of OBB and DR 52's), and 02 0201 with its 3 cylinders and 7ft 6.5in driving wheels makes a totally unique noise.

Incidentally, the Giesl disappeared from the Deutsche Reichsbahn virtually overnight in about 1980; probably on expiry of the licence. IIRC it was fitted to most 52's & 52.8's (2-10-0) and all 65's (2-8-4T) as well as small numbers of virtually everything else, including Prussian P8's (Class 38 4-6-0) and T18's (Class 78 4-6-4T). The Austrian OBB also fitted it to just about everything.

Ah, but I don't want to try out a Giesl. Perhaps I should have been plainer, so to be plain, what I would like to do is replace the double Kylchap system with a double Lempor. I wouldn't want to touch a Giesl set up though I agree you could hide it. As to 02 0201 being the fastest serviceable - that is very much the case of taking an opportunity. Given an open invitation to all possible contenders could prove interesting, you don't need the largest wheels, just steam and the ability to use it.

I agree that you could proboably hide a Giesl, but I was actually talking about the effect of a Lempor on the A4!. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

I wasn't all that clear either, so sorry for that. I think you could hide a double Lempor - must try to draw it up one day.

    Best Regards.
