Was the archive film only shot between Stoke and Leekbrook, or also between the Junction and Cauldon Low?

I ask because you see an unassisted loco of about 22klb tractive effort (42343 with 5 on the hook) using the line, but an 8F with 6 on needs banking, apparently.

I think you will find that there is a little difference in weight between 5 brake vans and 6 Mk1 coaches (1 being a lot heavier than a standard Mk1 as it is an RK). The train also had 33021 on the back which brings the train weight up to the equivilent of 9 Mk1's.

The 8F needed to be assisted up to 25 mph, without assistance it managed about 15 mph.

    Regards

    Chris

Can't believe the fantastic weather again on the Moors. Hope it's like this for the galas next month.Did the line walk again from Apesford to Leekbrook met 2 other gangs cutting back the trees at lineside. Now we have made the way for the locos to get up to the Moors they are cutting the under and overgrowth back 3 or 4 yards further back. The embankments approaching Bradnop tunnel have really had a hard cutback and should make some cracking photo shots as well as helping to dry out the trackbed as the sun can now actually penetrate through. The second area they are doing is around bridge 5 to improve the drivers sighting around the bend and the view from the train. Unfortunately this is not excessable for photographers so it is best seen from the train. 23 days to go Whoopee.

Fowler 4P tank 42343 had 5 passenger coaches in the film (watch the second half); it was the first loco shown, 41204, that took the brake van special.
I think 15 mph was about the speed that the 4P was managing.

It was requested, but don't think it is happening. Due to the amount of work on 5199 and 33201 still to do though I doubt there would be the time anyway.

That engine sounded as if it was enjoying itself. It blasted its way up the bank and blew off as soon as it stopped at the crossing. The exhaust was perfectly even, someone had made a very good job of the valve settings. This is the sort of power output that 8F's were built to provide.

It's great to see BR 8F 48624 on the line even if it is in LMS livery. There were 14 8Fs that were the last at Stoke shed and they were withdrawn or reallocated on 3/67. Have got the records for all final withdraws except for 48697 and 48768 which went to Heaton Mersey Why would they go there?. Does anyone know what was the last 8F up the Cauldon line with a stone train?

Why would 8Fs go to Heaton Mersey - Dear God!

Because Heaton Mersey handled the changeover from the EM1s at Brookfold off the MSW carrying coal from Wath to Fiddlers Ferry - back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, and the UK had its own economy

I don't think so. Fiddlers Ferry opened in 1971.

Didn't Heaton Mersey do the ICI Tunstead - Northwich hopper trains with 8Fs?

They did. The duties were shared with 2-8-0s from Northwich shed.

Thanks for the info Frank, by the way there's no need to call me God. To me Heaton Mersey was just one shed of many in my 10/6p Combined Volume that I never got round to visit, do you know when they were finally withdrawn

Thanks Martin, So 48697 was scrapped after 4 months and 48768 as soon as it got there. Makes you wonder why they were sent there in the first place.
