I noticed that also Stuart, and as you say it is a nice touch and it makes those at the lineside feel noticed.

Not sure if I posted this final section or not??

Ralph suggested an excellent splitscreen idea for our videos, showing 5043 from Angerholme to Ais Gill, from his on-board view and my distant lineside shot. Here's the result:

Yes, 777 has been a regular on the S&C over the years, as was City of Wells before her. Tangmere had a couple of trips early in her preservation career, too.

I recall Clan Line being called "up north" in 1990 or '91 at short notice, to replace Bahamas on 2 or 3 S&C runs. IIRC, BR were worried that a Jubilee (class 6, I think) wouldn't have enough power in reserve if it slipped to a stand on fallen leaves, whereas a class 8 pacific would. Much as I love Bulleid pacifics in general, and Clan Line in particular, I don't think I'd take bets on that particular contest! In the event, all went well, and "Eastleigh's Finest" made a lot of friends. It wasn't her first S&C visit, either. I've seen cine film of Clan Line's part in The Lord Bishop tour, which included the memorial service for Eric Treacy at Appleby station, and there were probably others.

    But we digress...!

Pfffttt, sorry Frank, no cred, if you could judge "proper engines" you wouldn't drive the car you do ......

It ain't the copper and brass that makes 'em run so well. More the fact that they were built at Swindon where they knew how to build a loco.
And to bring the argument up to date it's how the GWR mainline runners were restored and brought back to life by people who understand the GWR tradition of superb loco looks and performance. :)

Personally - what I would give to see Blue Peter up in them thar hills again!

or - An A1 KX to say Darlington, an A3 onwards to Aberdeen, an A2 back to Darlo and an A4 back to KX - we are currently missing one link, and it exists and is eminently restorable.

    Dream on!!

Building them at Swindon is not the real question. The ability in preservation to make them go is more to the point. You only have to look at the record in preservation to see what I mean.Apart from the King and Tyseleys efforts performance has been lacking especially during the 70's and 80's.There have been exceptions for instance 7325's test run from Stourbridge Junction which was memorable.
I am not saying that its an easy task but when they perform they do look smart.
