Actually I've throw you a bone..

How many truly new builds have actually got beyond a rolling chassis ?

Fact is there isnt enough money to roll round.. if there was we'd have new builds of everything you could think of from fleets of panniers to Crosti 9fs and GC 4.4.0s etc etc etc.

I really suspect two new build of the same type will result in zero. or a 30+ year timescale... of course if someone walks up with a big chunk of change then all bets are off.

My bets would be on the A1 trust to pull it off, but my bets are also on only one making it.. even if it ends up with the others groups frames & bits at some point.
Doesnt stop me believing 1 P2 and 1 A1 would be better than 2x P2s.
I never suggested what they should do with their money.. I'm just sharing my opinion.. like yourself, thats allowed I believe as is agreement to differ.

If we are counting beyond standard gauge, then I think you'll find a good many more new builds have cropped up over the years, and the fact of the matter is that batch production of new locomotives has been seen elsewhere in the world - Germany, and new build standard gauge 2-8-2Ts built by Meinengen. The bar has been set, and it is up to the preservationists and those who support UK preservation to step up to the plate and support ALL of the new build projects - not just one or two. Fact is, they are the future of our preserved railways, as even the BR standard designs are 50 years old or more now.

I don't disagree, but you're taking it to extremes I feel. Several groups have only got going over the last decade or so, and I feel - sincerely - that many of them will come to fruition in due course. Incidentally, marking a group's project on whether or not it has a rolling chassis is, I feel, a sincere oversight to the fact that some groups - the Atlantic and G5 projects, for instance - have boilers built or ready for use at time of writing.

Based on what exactly? I look at the two groups, listen to what I'm told, and understand there's a level of future cooperation between the two groups that would mutually benefit each other. That to me, says that two proactive groups, with some degree of engineering application and understanding, could in theory work together on particularly cumbersome components of said project.

I would not disagree with the second point, but take issue with the first. Tornado was built in under twenty years, with a ten year timescale initially. If the body is willing, and able, to fund a new-build in this vein, then we could in theory see a lot of metal cut in the next decade.

Given many of the posters here were unaware of the Mikado Society and its aims until The Railway Magazine article, I'm not sure this is an entirely fair viewpoint on your part.

That's your opinion, and fair enough. A great many people feel the same. I look at the locomotives currently available for charter work, and wonder if that would be the case in 20 years time, if the timings allowed for sections and speed restrictions are greatly revised in light of modern traction.

Speaking personally would expect them to go back to meiningen, they obviously have a good working relationship with them.

And nobody in the Uk could get anywhere near the cost eventually paid for the it.

And it was on time, and to budget, something sadly lacking in other boiler projects carried out by the "major players".

 

I can't imagine there'd be any advantages to going anywhere else? If you've built one already, that's a huge advantage when it comes to bidding for a second unit in terms of accurate pricing and delivery time.

 

Back then the exchange rate was 1.6 for £1...
Germany has had high inflation since then as well.
Even if they did get a big discount.. I'm betting it's still not far from double.

 

Ah but you'd not have to pay the design costs again would you. I guess that could have been say 20% of the total? I wonder who owns the rights to the design come to that?

Anyone going to buy the Bachmann 00 gauge model of 60163. I made a visit to a model railway shop in Southampton (Shirley High Street) today and I see its retailing at £113.00. Does anyone know if the A1 trust receives a percentage of the profit from this model.

Not sure if they do but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. I got mine last year.

Also I got my Tornado 21st Century Steam which is a great book with some small inaccuracies and one mispelling (with the word public missing its l) though.

 

Yes - the trust gets a donation from every model sold. Not sure if it's from the sale by Bachmann > Retailers or Retailers > Consumers, but a donation is made.

 

I'm very surprised that Bachmann haven't produced a Tornado train set (Loco plus three coaches and oval track) to help inspire younger people to join the heritage railway community/model railways. Could be a win win situation for Bachmann and the heritage railway community.

Bachmann have to be commended on their model of Tornado.

it isnt just the standard A1 model painted as 60163, it is a "Tornado" moulding..

Some unique bits to the Tornado model include: the air pump, and A4 whistle moulding behind the smoke deflector, and a complete new moulding of the tender (which is different from a standard LNER 8 wheel tender).

Not sure about a Tornado trainset, but maybe a "Top Gear A1 versus A1" trainset would be a good idea ? (you could even include miniature Hammond, May and Clarkson !!) as well as the car and bike... who knows a DVD as well.

 

I think you're onto something. A Scalextric/Hornby collaboration Race To The North set maybe?

 

Don't mention that to James May. He'll be laying Scalextric and OO Gauge track alongside the East Coast main line or the A1 all of the way.

 

Looking at next years events on the MHR web site Tornado will make another visit in October 2011.
