There was a tentative proposal, to take a lease out on the old GWR Broad Gauge tranfer shed at Exeter St Davids.

Nothing came of this, most probably because Network Rail want too much money.

So they would rather see it stay overgrown and disused than have a tennant take it on and put to good use, despite being listed i believe.

a Lot of railways seem to have a lot of space for Piles of bits some of which have been thus for at least a decade, think its called an overhaul queue- but SG is right, because of the number of Locos requiring overhaul Railway Workshop Space is over subscribed .
At least the Hengist Pile of bits continues to grow and will in the forseable future need a suitable place for those bits to be assembled. its just unfortunate that there isn't an ideal place with the appropriate gear and a pool of 'heads in the game' (ie a preserved railway workshop) that wants to take this project under its wing

Fair comments all, only problem is the time factor for starting the major construction work. How long can we have a growing collection of bits before they have to be assembled or get damaged/lost/borrowed etc. I agree, rail access is not a requirement.

Further to post #82 (unfortunately my quote button isn't working at the moment, think my computer has issues!), bear in mind that in 1995 'Tornado' was at a broadly similar stage to 'Hengist' now; machined and drilled main frames and an assortment of other components. It took a further 13 years, with the highly polished and professional marketing and publicity teams associated with 60163, to get a complete loco.

I quite agree with you, which I why I suggest an industrial site or a location with aircraft hangars would be ideal. Unfortunately I cant think of any locations nearer Bristol than the ones advocated. Unless there are any spare units down at Avonmouth.

Very true SG, there isn't much by way of improvement available on how the 60163 project was supported and managed A lot of folk from 1995 are still shaking heads and clapping hands in appreciation and disbelief that it only took another 13 years.
That said the trail has been blazed and there's a lot more belief now that new build projects should, can and will succeed. Hengist is essentially a much simpler machine with nowhere near as much tooling needed to create than Tornado, but whilst thats in its favour there are a lot fewer people going to be enthused by a Standard 6 than an LNER (just) Class 8 Pacific, especially one intended for preserved lines. One cant help thinking that 82045 is drinking from the same pool and progress has been rapid there. Hengist also does n't seem to get the column inches that Patriot, Beachy Head, Betton Grange seem to get Perhaps when 82045 is complete the pace will pick up with Hengist...

I mst agree with much of what has been said.
Tornado was a pioneer project, it constructed a 'modern' LNER design class of engine which had been removed at the scrapyard, it caught the imagination, and had/has a very experienced marketing director.
They were very lucky to get Hopetown, NELPG also benefitted next door.
I think most other projects are also replacing engines that were lost in the scrapyard. Patriot, to me, is a very nationalist project. Others have the advantage to cannibalise off other wrecks(?).
Hengist may be seen as a copy of Tornado, but to me the 10 number Class 6 engines never had a chance to prove what they could do. They missed their slot at Rugby and were tested in the field, some fields were better nutured than others.
They were a late BR design which was improved during running and stood to be improved again. The ultimate aim is to have at least 1 member of each BR Class running again, Hengist is the most expensive and is being led by a small band of die-hards.
It will never get the column inches until it is a rolling chassis with cab and smokebox, and a good home.
Incidentally, where do all their members live? There isn't a band of them in Lancashire who would love to build the loco is there?
To digress slightly, the idea of a P2 leaves me cold. Why not build some V1 tanks or other engines for the preserved railways?
I would love to see Hengist on the mainline with Dof G, Britannia and OC, perhaps it might happen?

Me too, in fact i was looking forward to meeting you in that capacity.

Get the impression the core of the Hengist group are bristol based, i Know of one other Chap in south Yorks.
They are usually spreading the word at GCR Events... not easy for a locomotive type indiginous to SW Scotland

Not forgetting that Hengist, Horsa, Canute, Wildfire and Firebrand were destined for the S and/or SW of England.

    Entering fantasy world.

    Or a gala somewhere with the above along with 84030, a 78XXX, 82045, 77020 (when someone takes it on), a 80XXX, 76XXX, 73XXX, and a 73XXX to complete the line-up.

    Back to reality.

Suppose Mattlock is a bit nearer to the south west, is there a connection (for rail vehicles) ? or just a station...

This is a southern-based group, I believe - how about Yeovil Junction? They've also got a shed without a lot in it as far as I know.

I had Yeovil Junction in mind in an earlier contribution. I don't know what facilities they have there other than servicing and storage.
Perhaps they have already been approached or would want too much rent, everyone needs to pay their way nowadays.
What really did happen about Exeter transfer shed?
Incidentally, I am a member of 72010 group, and will continue to contribute to it, as I am able.

How about contacting Greg Wilson at the churnet valley as i hear he is building a shed at leekbrook junction for the mcr. Not entirely sure how big but there is also the chance of a shed being built at froghall and wit a main line connection on the way soon. Could be good.

Thanks for that comment Gav106. I heard that railways all over the place have been approached and no one has room for such a project. Is it the time commitment of perhaps having a shed space taken for 10-15 years, I would have thought folk would have welcomed the chance to be involved but then I am biased. Mind you, 10-15 years more sounds a long time to me!
Otherwise, does anyone know of a suitable shed going spare which could be dismantled and relocated? Like NELPG did at Grosmont.

As it does not need to be rail connected what about a barn on a farm? With the current conditions there may be one local to the main group of members avilable.
