    One advantage of going round on our own was that we got basically a guided go-anywhere tour, including a good look over the Peckett and unlocking the signalbox so we could throw a few levers! But I did feel a bit sorry that what was essentially a labour of love was going pretty well unappreciated, despite being in a fairly convenient location - it's not exactly out of the way.

    It was some industrial premises in Stoke. I forget where, now. They had originally been rescued by a Railway Society (Staffordshire Railway Society?) and this organisation was being wound up. The guy who owned the premises was a member. I'd be interested to know where they are now.

    Definitely a different Newcastle, although a Manning, nevertheless! I went to look at MW254 with a view to the various bits coming to the Middleton Railway but it was at a time when we were in the throes of rebuilding the site and we couldn't realistically accommodate it. From memory, there was the cylinder block, valve gear, connecting rods and the crank axle, complete with wheels but no tyres. Can't remember whether part of the frames existed, or not. It dates from 1868 so it is probably a fairly important piece of kit, historically.
    Incidentally, I was wrong when I said that no other Manning Wardle Class M's survive as the other 'Newcastle' is also an M, albeit a special.

    Midland Railway 158A. When I visited Butterly last year this historic loco was stored in a shed, but covered in bird droppings and (non coal) dust.

    Until a visit to Shildon a few years ago, I had never heard of Braddyl either.

    At the risk of opening a wound as great as the Phyllis Rampton trust, (!) there is also a group, of which the name escapes me, that has at least two medium sized standard gauge tank engines in it's poseession - though there was talk of them being loaned to preserved lines at one time. I can't remember the name of it though, but there was a long discussion on here a long time ago. Anyone help out?

    You may be thinking of the Ivatt trust that was based at Quainton, but has now sent its two Ivatt 2-6-2 tanks and its 2-6-0 tender loco to the Isle of Wight Railway.

    We visited this year and were more than happy with the state of the loco. So much so that it was decided to start a new page with the MRT and not remove the loco from Butterley. It had been cleaned too.

    Perhaps not forgotten, but not used for a long time, Windle, Borrows No 53 of 1909 (in preservation for 49 years & 1 month) left The Middleton Railway & was delivered to Ribble Steam Railway on Thursday 25th November.
    To be restored to working order once Andrew Barclay 2261 & the Grant Richie have been completed.

    We now have 2 of the 3 surviving Borrows locos at Preston, no real plans for the hat trick

    More good news! Nice to see "WINDLE" at an appropriate location where she will be appreciated. Credit due to Middleton for making what was probably a difficult decision to let the engine go, since it was one of the very early arrivals at Dartmouth Yard, way back in 1961.

    This was a sad loss to the "Engine House" at Moor Road. Provision was made in the original design to accommodate these historic bits and attempt to use them in conjunction with the old boiler from SIR BERKELEY as an interperative piece, but as time progressed, the railway was unable to proceed with the scheme. It would indeed be nice to know where these bits are and if there is still a future for them in preservation.

    Sorry, dace83, but that photo is most definately NOT a Sentinel locomotive. It is in fact part of HE299, "HODBARROW", an 0-4-0ST which used to be displayed at Hunslet's jack lane Works before going first to the NRM at York, and thence to Armley Mills, where is has languished since. Hodmarrow mines DID have a Sentinel for a while, but this ain't it, I'm afraid.
