I believe that there is also the problem that not all support coaches are through piped for steam heating.

4932 has only been kept in steam to prevent frost damage.

    Here we go finally!

Six minutes of confused station announcements, A4 whistling, wheelslips, sunshine, cloud, steam, ducks, shivering and 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley. Hope you enjoy it!

Excellent, Steve. Back to the 60's with the wheelslip. I wonder if the driver was actually a little concerned that SNG wasn't getting away. Without knowing what happened, I was expecting her to have a restart !!! Heavy load, bend, wet rail mmmmm. Well done driver.

I have it on good authority that the rail was indeed very slippery, and the driver was taking care not to slip excessively.

Considering the fireworks that often accompanied steam departures from York in the days of yore, the Ascot departure was well controlled and quite subdued by comparison.

Indeed, very tricky departure from Ascot. The track was covered in think Frost. I'm not 100% sure but I think you can see the driver working the gravity sanders after which the slipping stops.

Ah ha - beg your pardon, I assumed they would be steam sanders.

I felt like I was by that time as well, and I'd only been out there an hour, not all night!

A4's have both steam and gravity sands for forward direction. Nothing for reverse, though, which can be a problem on heritage railways when running tender first.
