We spent two cold but perfect days chasing 41241 & 80002 on the Santa's.

Gone back to a little compact again, best compromise with filming, F200exr.

Does anyone know why they double head and have a diesel at the back ? Wouldnt it make more sense to top and tail or just have one up front with the box giving a shove if neccessary ?

It would certainly look nicer for the Punters if the banking Loco was a steamer and facing downhill.

I can sympathise. I bought, several years ago, a Canon 'bridge' Sureshot, the plot being to mount it side by side with the video camera. I chose a 'bridge' because it wouldn't make the racket that an SLR makes when taking stills while the video was running. Unfortunately the 'bridge' shutter still makes a ticking sound which gets picked up by the mic, so that idea went bust. Now I'm stuck with a largeish camera, a camera which is about the same size as an old fashioned film SLR, which takes good pictures but too big, when encumbered with video camera, tripod and backpack, to cart around. What I need is to go back to a compact, similiar to the one I gave away to my daughter, but as VAT is going up in the New Year, I need to make up my mind quickly!

All the best, give Penny a hug.

    Regards

Double heading is because they need two engines to provide enough steam heat along with pulling power for the extra long trains they use on the santa, and the diecel is to save time, no run round required. Works fine until they need more water.

I bagged the f200exr for only just over hundred pounds, its referb direct from fuji, same size chip is LX5 but its an exr as well. Oh, us the code PSPEND on checkout and you will get another 20 pounds off, should just over 120. I have had a F100FD for years, another refurb, never let me down, always takes good pictures, so it made sense to get the f200exr.

warranty? fuji give you six months with a refurb but you can still increase this as well, just the same as a normal camera from them.

But with a steamer on each end, would provide enough power, heat and there would be no need to run around, other than someone having to take the token from one end to the other at Oxenhope/Keighley. I can see that watering the Keighley end Loco might be difficult, you would have to run the train onto 3 and stop it short of the platform. This is hardly an unsurmountable problem.

On reflection though only the WD Could handle the train on its own with confidence in the event of a failure, so you would want a deisel crew on standby in case that itself, failed ... and if they are there anyway it might as well be on the rear of the train with the steamers at the front so they can water together
Hope i havent detracted too much from your thread, just got the anti deisel mist for a mo...

Yes I am an active volunteer
Banking trains on passenger services on the KWVR is prohibited except in emergency. So would mean the front engine pulling 6 coaches plus a dead steam engine on the back...

Im sure there is a sound basis for this. The scanario could be: WD ( or big Jim when its finished) on the front, jinty,( or the lanky tank, or the coal tank when finished) or at a push 41241 at the rear... (Technicality: when does enough regulator to keep the wheels turning/cylinders warm/atomisers functioning become banking... you wouldnt want the rear engine doing too much work anyway as it would need watering more often). I appreciate that the Santa Specials are big earners (i take my family every year) and that the punters expect things to run to time and a failure could be really messy
I also think that they woud appreciate a chuff chuff on both ends.
