Correct. Gresley noted the efectiveness of the gravity sanding on GWR Castles during the 1923 'Exchanges' so fitted the system to his 'Pacifics'.

So how do these twin systems actually work? Do they share common sandboxes? Are there separate two operating levers? Are A3's and V2's etc similarly equipped? Thanks.

The steam sanding is actuated by a steam valve and acts on the middle (driving) wheels The gravity sanding by a lever and bowden cable and acts on the leading coupled wheels. Separate sandboxes. I'm fairly certain it is the same on the V2 and the K4 but happy to be told I'm wrong. Don't know about the A3 but I'd guess it's the same.

Doesn't Bittern and 103 have modified bi-directional steam sanders and the cylinder cock lever moved over to the drivers side where the gravity sander lever was?

The A4 does indeed. Both are mounted around the reverser column.
