The boiler for the new LMS Patriot No 45551 The Unknown Warrior may be built at Pete Waterman's LNWR workshops in Crewe.

The full exclusive story is now running on www.heritagerailway.co.uk

It was announced at the agm in crewe on the 14 th Nov as being built in crewe. There not talking to anyone else about building the boiler. I have heard a few different quotes on prices. I was told at the start of Nov it would be 350k then at the agm 500k then in a magazine it would be 750. The new smoke deflectors look really nice. The project is going well but we need more and more money to reach the target of 2018 for being in steam. All donations are welcome. It doesn't have to be money. If anyone has any unwanted railway items they don't want please donate them and we Will sell them. Im donating a signed Michael schumacher picture for them to sell on there ebay site.

Now that the loco's driving wheels are being produced and the tender is being rebuilt at Barry, attention is naturally turning to the "money-swallower" of any steam loco project - the boiler (even if a boiler already existed it would be expensive to overhaul but I guess you know that already!). I think I'm going to have to search through my stuff for some items to donate too! In the meantime please support this new-build because I think it says so much more than just another steam loco that some old duffers want to see running again. I agree with Gav106 - those deflectors do look good! So, lets get the boiler!

I'm sure it's something the project will investigate, but in his book Living With London Midland Locomotives, the late John Powell maintained that a basic error had been made when the Patriot boilers were designed. From memory the small tubes were sized at 2 1/4 inches but should have been 2 1/8 inches, so when the Patriots were working hard the hot gases tended to be pulled through the small tubes instead of doing their work on the superheater elements. Interesting that a historical engineering matter from the 1930s could have relevance today.

It's always good to hear of another works being prepared to build a full boiler. Rather than just parts that is.
Good luck. It would be nice to think Hengist will follow shortly but we shall see.

emmmm. Not sure about that, i think that article is a bit missleading because although it seems to state that an A4 boiler is the same it then puts this. "Therefore The Unknown Warrior will be fitted with a Crewe-built boiler that was originally designed and manufactured in Crewe" and as all know that A4s were LNER that seems to contradict it.

The paragraph about the a4 boiler is supposed to be seperate. If you re read it and miss that bit out it makes sense. The part about the boiler is just showing that they are able to produce copper fireboxes.

    That's a relief!!!
...........about the Patriot not having an A4 boiler I mean...............
definitely a bo-bo with the editting of the article. The paragraghs should have been in a different order and it would read much better.

The Patriots and the re-built Claughtons had the same type of boiler. It was designed at Crewe but many of them were made at Derby.

'Claughton and Patriot 4-6-0s' by Toms and Essery, Wild Swan 2006, ISBN 1905184190, £16.95, gives good insights into the type and it's still in print. See http://britishrailwaybooks.co.uk/books/ISBN/1905184190.html

It has always been my impression that the A4 boilers were developed from the A3 but had a higher pressure which caused a number of detail design changes. Didn't 'Flying Scotsman' have one such boiler until fairly recently?

It seems that people are taking 61624's and my postings seriously, rather than the tongue-in-cheek intention that we had! What has happened in the write-up is fairly obvious to anybody with even a slight knowledge of the subject.
    Ah well......

Yea, but it all makes life a bit more interesting when the tongue gets pushed even further into cheek. Life can be too serious at times, especially as a Toon supporter today!
