Warwickshire was on a separate piece of track not connected to the SVR and so was almost certainly easier to access from the car park.

On 30 October 813 was also positioned over the wheel-drop (per the Bridgnorth station blog). The locomotive frames have now entered the workshops at Bridgnorth, filling the space on the jacks vacated by 2857. It is hoped this visit will not be for too long as much work was undertaken on the locomotive over ten years ago, and the loco has only run around 12,000 miles since these repairs. The boiler is currently stripped down and work will focus on repairs to the steel wrapper next. From SVR Engineering.

On 30 October the bogie bolster in the yard containing 2857's boiler was shunted to the boiler shop siding and the steam crane was moved from the headshunt alongside the main running line to the yard for mid week fitting work (Bridgnorth station blog). She was re-united with her boiler on 20 November. Much work still remains to completed this winter, hopefully 2857 will be joining the working fleet in early 2011. Work will focus on riveting up the smokebox to the boiler, all insulation and cladding to fit, and the alignment and fitting of the new chimney. The loco will then return to the main works for completion and final painting. More details of this comprehensive overhaul from the 2857 Society website.

5764 is to appear at the West Somerset Railway Winter Steam Festival on 29 and 30 December 2010. “Efforts by the West Somerset Railway's Chief Mechanical Engineer Andrew Forster have paid off and a guest engine has been obtained. Appropriately enough for an event at the end of the 175th Anniversary Year of the Great Western Railway the locomotive concerned is a 57xx Class Pannier Tank, no 5764, hired from the Severn Valley Railway. The 57xx was an enormously successful class of engine with over 800 being built. No 5764 was constructed at Swindon in 1929 and was withdrawn by British Railways in 1960. However it was then sold to London Transport for use on engineering trains and as number L95 continued to see service until 1971 followed by purchase for preservation. Younger enthusiasts will also of course know that Duck in the Thomas stories is a Pannier Tank”.

There is no mention of the Spring Steam Gala. Is there going to be one?

    Regards

To answer my own question, no, because of tracklaying. The railway isn't intended to be fully open until 28 March. I'll have to cancel the B&B.

Railway Magazine reports that LNWR 3020 Cornwall is to replace the Midland Compound at the Engine House. The Midland Compound and the Duke of Sutherland's Saloon are moving to the SRPS at Bo'ness.

Construction started in late 2010 on 7802's new tender. The Erlestoke Manor Fund website update December 2010 http://www.erlestokemanorfund.co.uk/EMF_news/EMF_Dec2010.html has images of work on the new tender. The steel plates for the new tender have all been drilled by EMF members in the workshop at Bewdley Machine Shop. Pictures include drilling the front step plate and front buffer beam and machining of the newly cast tender water gauge.

Do we know what the future holds for Bradley after next year? Reports in SVR News would suggest she is the last year of her ticket and 2011 will be her last season..

34027's frames were moved into the yard at Bridgnorth to be lifted by the steam crane. On 14 December 34027 became a 4-0-2 pending a visit to the wheel drop for her driving and centre wheels to be fitted

The latest Steam Railway has it that 43106 will visit the North Norfolk Railway for their Autumn Steam Gala next year?

Volunteers had been out on Christmas Day evening re-lighting fires for the following day’s services. Another freezing day saw volunteers raising steam in temperatures of -10C. Notwithstanding, 7802 succumbed to frozen pipes 26 December and was failed. 43106 failed 27 December with cylinder damage halfway up Eardington bank, its left-hand cylinder cover is broken and left hand piston needs replacing (with any luck that's all that will need doing).

Sounds like a marathon effort, well done to all concerned. 43106 must be one of the unluckliest locos around, hope it's not as serious as it sounds...

Correction, 43106 failed 26 December (my mistake). From January 4th - February 11th 2011 due to major engineering work at Arley there will be no service during this period, and the line will be breached. In one sense it is good that repairs on 43106 can take place. I suppose that on the downside is that maintaining several locos remotely from Bridgnorth takes a lot of extra effort and the repair work might take efforts away from work on other restoration projects.
