34073? Does anyone know how much the owners want for her? And ballpark how much she would cost to return to main line standard? (In case of a Christmas lottery win, of course....)

The only info on 35005 is the insulating lagging has been removed from the boiler barrel.

The figure mentioned previously was around £250,000 for purchase. Return to mainline standard? My guesstimate would be between £250,000 - £500,000
You'd better hope for a very large lottery win!!

Great news for 34058 and the MHR

Wonderful that another Bulleid is going to be restored. But, a silly question no doubt, wouldn't if be better at the MHR to just keep the ones they already have in working order?

I think getting this Loco is looking towards the long term future and I understand that "Pyle" comes with it,s own restoration team.

I am also unsure when Loco,s of the present fleet go out of ticket, perhaps others can help here?

    Regards

I understand 34027 Taw Valley was partially re wheeled yesterday at Bridgnorth, hopefully this machine will be back in the fold in 2011.

By the way, I meant 34073 will eventually become the last unrestored Barry 'Light Pacific', in my previous post... Also, does the Mid-Hants now have an owning interest in 34058, or is it providing the restoration base and facilities to help speed up the process? If the latter, then the restoration has relatively little to do with the MHR's list of priorities, and is down to a contract with the 34058 society.

Unless anyone can correct me on this, I think that 34028 is probably the next Bulleid to go out of ticket around 2013/14 (excluding possible extensions). 34007 and 35028 sometime around 2016; 34046 and 34070 in 2018 and 34059 in 2019.

Any news about how the boiler's coming on after the upheaval of the move to Buckfastleigh? This overhaul is one to watch as it has ramifications for all Bulleid owners regarding how much of a Pacific can be repaired/replaced.

34101 seems to be progressing at the NYMR. It is down to be running in 2012, but there's a long way to go - complete inner firebox reconstruction for starters. The latest Moorsline has some pictures of the inner firebox starting to be assembled. I think the work on the boiler of this engine will be at least as extensive as any carried out elsewhere.

Great News about 34058 going to the MHR for restoration, lets hope that with the loco now going to be located at a site with all the facilities and expertise to hand that the MHR can provide, that restoration will not be too long.

Certainly if you look at the 34058 website, a lot of new parts have been manufactured.

Its interesting also to note that the tender wheelsets are complete units ready to fit, could they perhaps be used to complete 34007 Wadebridge`s tender much more quickly and then the ones in the process of being made for 34007 be made up later down the restoration process to go under 34058`s tender?

Another interesting thing of note is that the boiler No.1266 fitted to Sir Frederick Pile was originally fitted to 34001 Exeter, making it the oldest light pacific boiler in preservation and the first one built at Eastleigh. A picture on the website shows that the firebox has had an inner patch repair, in exactly the same location as what the MHR had to do with the boiler of 34016 Bodmin, some few years back.

Great to see that 34066 Spitfire smoke box door will be used on 35006 P&O.

    3 things spring to mind here;

    1. Ownership (Not going into any more detail about this)
    2. Man-Power - Other loco's waiting to be overhauled
    3. Money (Or possibly lack off)

Whats the current state of 34007 at the moment?

Has she been winterised and the on loan tender from the `Boscastle` returned to the GCR?

Also how are the repairs to 35005`s tender going?

I take it a few volunteers have attended Ropley over the past week to work off all the Christmas over indulgence and to escape the family for a bit, maybe someone can post something.

Also anybody at Bitton know if 34058 is being prepaired for road transport, to the MHR?

I would imagine the boiler will need to be dropped back down on the frames before the move.

Sobering to think that 21C1 rolled out 70 years ago this summer, complete with Widow's Peak at a time when ultimate victory in WW2 was anything but certain - indeed, before the Pacific War had started. Being new here, please forgive the probable repetition, but has anyone conducted a serious, costed estimate of what it would cost to back convert one of the unrestored Merchant Navys?

    Thanks

    Toby

No problem with being repetitive, Toby, its usually a good thing that keeps an idea or interesting point of discussion in the public consciousness. As for a feasibility study, there were rumours in the last two years that a group (possibly those working on 35011) was considering it, but nothing has been heard of since. I suppose its a case of wait and see what happens. It would be nice to think that the anniversary year of Channel Packet's birth would bear fruit in this direction, and I'd seriously consider contributing to such a plan.
