Hi as everyone is getting so excited about the up coming visit of LYD to the L&BR in Devon. I though it was about time that a new thread was started about LYN so for those of you who are interested in this loco, this is the current state of play,

I should also say that while I am also a member of the 762 group what I am posting hear is from the latest newsletter plus a few comments of my own. It is hoped that the new wooden Cab for LYN will be on display at the September Gala weekend at Woody Bay. Hopefully some of the other patterns will also be available for looking at. There will be a group stand in the cab, so if you are about, come over and say hello, as it is nice to put a name to a face.

Following an intervention by a non member, the 762 club now finds it self in the process of restructing the project into an independent company with charitable aims. Existing share holders are being asked to approve this change, but there are still some issues that need to be looked at, so it may take a while for this to all be agreed.

One item that the new owning body needs to look at and that is how it can remain democratic but also how it can move forward and obtain charitable status.

Items are still being gathered together for the 762 project, and a new set of works drawings are currently being worked on, which will allow the use of modern steam technology through out in this new build with the use of a higher boiler pressure to allow for these changes to work.

The project will also be using technologies that have been produced and developed by L D Porta and other modern steam engineers. The locomotive will be built by the preferred builder Patrick Keef on a stage by stage basis once construction has started.

    Regards

    Colin Rainsbury
    (762 shareholder)

Good idea, Colin, LYN, and the project - The 762 Club - has it's own website - see the link in my signature below. This is due to be updated shortly, but already has a wealth of background information on the original LYN, and the proposed replacement.

The intention to use modern steam theory & practice is an interesting, and in some respects welcome development

In English, does that mean someone grassed the 762 Club up over gift aid?

Sounds like it! I voiced doubts over the eligibility of the scheme for gift aid in an earlier thread here, but I didn't take it any further. Perhaps someone from the Chrity Commission read my post, but better to get it right now than further down the line.

My (unofficial) understanding of this is that the 762 Club were exploiting the same loophole that had been used succesfully by the FR and LYD project, among others. This was due to a degree of uncertainty over interpreting the rules, even among HMRC staff, but that the loophole has now been closed. All Gift Aid claimed under the previous scheme has been repaid, but will be re-claimable by the 762 Club once it has been restructured with charitable status.

Early construction work has begun on LYN - the cab has been assembled, and will be on display at Woody Bay for the L&B September Gala

See the thread in "Events and Galas" for more information.

Members of the 762 Club have recently received a newsletter outlining recent developments- this will appear on the website in a week or so.

Recent update on the Lyn website:
    'Assembly Contract Awarded
The 762 Club has agreed terms with Alan Keef Ltd for the final assembly of the Baldwin 2-4-2T locomotive for the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. The assembly work will be carried out at Alan Keef's facilities at Ross-on-Wye. Patrick Keef, who has considerable previous experience working with Baldwin locomotives, will be involved throughout the project.'

Good news, but it would be more impressive if there was something to assemble!

I understand that the 50% membership point (175 out of 350) has been reached (though may not be recorded on the site for a few days yet), and that about 13K extra has been raised in sponsored items (the equivalent of 17 further memberships).
In two years we feel this is quite impressive, and bodes well for finishing the fund-raising in order to provide a suitable loco to pull the reconstructed L&B coaches.
BTW, for those interested in these coaches, there is a fund for them too: see http://lynton-rail.co.uk/story/news/3794 and the recent news item at the L&B members' page: http://lynton-rail.co.uk/Trust/Members_Online_Page
Donating to this project or other L&B schemes can be done at http://lynton-rail.co.uk/railway/shop/donate

Surprised to see that those running the Lyn project were unaware that Gift Aid was non-permissible without charity status - the original L&B Trust was set up precisely because of this, as we were told that without it, no gift aid for Project Yeo. As director of Project Yeo at the time I acceded to enlarging the remit of the first Trust to encompass the whole railway, ironically setting in place the demise of Yeo - had we kept it a solely Project-based Trust, separate from the L&B proper, I have no doubt that Yeo would have been running by now. Unfortunately, funding for the railway, and then Axe, meant that an L&B-owned Yeo was never built. This first Trust was then supplanted by the present, very L&B organisation, which never saw Yeo as having any sort of priority, and thus the frames gently rust whilst other schemes are followed.

My advice to the Lyn Project? - keep blue water between yourselves and the L&B proper! Best of luck.

Hi Roger, as you know, nothing is simple in the railway heritage world and while it was hoped that Lyn was going to be a Trust loco at the time of setting up the group, it was felt that the share issue route was the better way to go.

I think most people will agree that the way the Lyn project is being run is the correct way to go forward for the L&BR, and that is to have projects and not have everything in one basket.

I think is it is easier to manage many smaller projects that having one huge project where you have to have so many people involved.

I do know of some plans for the Manning Wardle’s after Lyn so watch this space, what I can tell you is it is not going to be just a one off loco build.

The relationship the Trust has with James Evans, Paul Lewin and Jon Whalley is very good and they are backing the idea of more Manning Wardle’s coming off the production line at some stage.

Not sure as to the current plans for YEO but I do know that fund raising is still continuing should you want to contribute. I have suggested that we look at setting up a Manning Wardle Trust to take this project forward. But discussions are still on going with the Trust about that and just how this new Trust would interact with the L&BR Trust itself.

LYD Cost £500,000 in the end so the Trust is looking to raise the £2 million for the four we need, so they can be batch built in stages.

Don’t be surprised if you see other locos come to stay in Devon as building the Manning Wardle’s will take time, I can see that we will have a collection of locos in Devon which may not be the L&BR but they will be able to claim a right to be there either through association to the old company or the current owner(s) would like it to run on the L&BR.
