Very droll, you have a point but most farms would struggle with loco frames on an artic, let alone a low loader with 100 tonnes of finished Loco...

I was not thiking about the full loco just a home to keep things ticking over short term (3 - 5 years). It will be a good few years before it becomes 100 tonnes of loco.

Lets face it, a reasonable sized unit on an industrial estate would do the job initially. However, each move costs money which really should be spent on the building, so one move to the build place would be preferred.

If your located around bristol area how about long marston. There is the main line connection hope fully by the time the locomotives built it would be connected to the g w r. I did hear the group there were leaving which means there would be space. Do you know what's happening with the shed where p and o lines is as that Will soon be working.

Sellindge sounds like a good place, but it all depends upon the location and availability of the workforce.
It would be a long trek from bristol to do a evenings work.
Long Marston could be a better option.
All ideas are very gratefully noted and passed on to the Chairman, as he requested.
All of them are too far from me to allow me to help, unless Hopetown is available for the next 10 years???
(No, didn't think so, other ideas I guess.)

Just a thought - have they tried a "quid pro quo" sort of deal as used by the Bluebell Atalantic group to get a shed, rather than just hoping some railway offers (precious!) undercover space.

As I understand it, the Atlantic shed was funded 80%:20% by the Bluebell Trust and the Atlantic group (with any cost overruns over an initial agreed price paid by the Atlantic group). In brief, for their 20%, the Atlantic group get the building for as long as they need; in exchange, the Bluebell get the building thereafter. So from the point of view of a space-starved railway, that's a better deal than simply hoping someone will give you some space for nothing or just rent.

Having the shed is just the start of it, though; albeit a big start. Thought needs to be given to overhead lifting equipment, never mind a pit, and there's all the tools and equipment that will become necessary when the build starts to come together, even if the majority of machining work is outsourced. Acquiring these isn't necessarily going to be cheap and will divert precious funds away from the actual build. It would be far better to try and get involved with an active restoration/overhaul site where these things would, hopefully, be available.
To my mind, Sellindge has a lot going for it, including, experience, but whether its facilities could be available, I know not.

MN 35006 P&O Steam Navigation Company, is currently approaching the end of its long restoration in the loco shed at Toddington, not Long Marston (GWR 2807 beat it into service - sorry, could not resist it!). You may be confusing 35006 with a BR Mk 1 coach which is also numbered 35006 and once belonged to a MN 35006 supporter and that coach is (or was when I last heard of it) at Long Marston!

Bit of a drift here but the Long Marston collection was supposed to be moving lock stock etc to Sharpness in south Gloucestershire but I guess the current economic situation has stymied that little plan for now. In fact, noone seems to know anything about the Stratford & Broadway Group at Long Marston these days.

Sorry you have miss read what i wrote. When i said the group was leaving i was indeed referring to the s b r s leaving long marston. As quoted in a railway magazine earlier this year. And the part about p and o lines was meant to be separate. My pc is broken so.Im using my phone and its harder to write haha

A reasonable comment Steve, but there are several overhaul facilities which rely on jacks to lift chassis, outdoor hire crane lifting and general careful manhandling to replace the overhead crane, they are an expensive item especially when the building needs to be designed to suit them.
Most obstacles can be overcome with thought, care and a lot of ingenuity.
You just need the basics, somewhere to keep the weather off, security, light, storage and a means to get underneath safely. Oh yes, a bit of heating is always nice, but if not you have to work harder to keep warm!

You're 100% right when you say that most obstacles can be overcome with thought, care and ingenuity but, having some suitable lifting equipment available ought to be top of the priorities of any well organised new build team. Unless you are going to build outside, every time you need to have a big lift, the frames will have to be moved outside and an expensive crane hired. And big lifts are necessarily confined to the complete frames, themselves. How many times are those cylinders going to be lifted into position before those fitted bolts are finally driven in? A good lifting gantry or a reasonable sized forklift are really the absolute minimum.
Heating is a lot more important than you suggest. You want as good team built up and you need to cater for their welfare if you want to keep them. Not everyone is made from hardy stock. four hardy people are going to accomplish a lot less than a dozen fair weather chaps if you don't cater for the latter.

I cannot argue against you Steve. There are indeed standards to be used as set by our good friend, Health and Welfare legislation which applies in these cases me thinks. However, it is a question of spending money on facilities or the project, it only gets spent once. Having served my time in a big draughty engineering works I know the old situation quite well. In this case it is not me who makes the decision but it is partly my money!

I have just received photos of casting patterns for combined frame stretcher and brake cylinder support ,and the exhaust spider, so things are still progressing folks. Will add the photos tonight.

Once they are cast doesthat mean the frames can be assembled ?

Well, I understand the fabricated stretchers are made so possibly when these parts are cast, fettled and machined Ian Riley can get busy rivetting them together. 'Corse, I could be missing something like paying for the casting and machining?

I'm pleased to see this project now being progressed in a logical order. Are all the fabricated and cast stretchers now to hand?

I understand from the website, www.72010-hengist.org, that all the fabricated stretchers are ready. I expect that since the patterns have just been finished, the cast stretchers etc will now be looking for the finance to cast and machine. I am confident that will be organised shortly.
If you check out the very informative website you will find the full story so far, and if you join/donate you will help the progress. Thank you.

Forgive me here, did not read all the messages on this section but, how much of this locomotive has been built and does the project have a proper home yet?

I could just refer you to the previously mentioned website.............. but I won't.

Sorry if this is repetitive for others out there but.....
Briefly, smokebox and cab are almost complete, they probably need to be fixed in place before they can be finished. A few items need sponsorship.
Frames are cut and machined ready for assembly with the fabricated frame stretchers, which are ready, and the cast stretchers/parts as soon as they are cast, fettled and machined. This assembly is to be done at Ian Rileys works.
Smoke deflectors, front apron and smokebox door are ready.
Frame extensions and pony truck are ready or well on.
Dozens if not hundreds of small items are in store ready.
Still a lot to do before we think of the biggy boiler.

The current big appeal is for the cylinders,(£24k for pattern), motion and running gear etc.

Oh yes and please, can anyone suggest where, in the Bristol area, there might be a shed which we can use to assemble it all???? That will be desperate soon, we hope.
If not a shed in situ, perhaps a redundant steel structure that can be dismantled and re-erected somewhere suitable??

For further, and more complete, info.and history of the project,50044 Exeter and anyone else, please see the official website, http://www.72010-hengist.org and if you want to help build it or fund it, all donations will be very gratefully received. This project will succeed, it's just a case of when.
