Terribly sad. My deepest sympathy must go to all his family and friends and colleagues on the footplate. Mainline Steam has lost one of its greatest characters. RIP Paul. You'll be sorely missed.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all his friends and family.

I regret I never had the pleasure of his company, but many at VT knew him well.

    Our deepest sympathies.

    Re: Christmas Tynesider. 18/12

Only heard the shocking news about the death of Paul Kane when waiting for the arrival of Clan Line and the Black 5 at Victoria yesterday.

I only met Paul once when he was EWS traction inspector on a steam excursion to Plymouth and I have this abiding memory of a very knowledgable, polite and nice man who left me feeling I had known him for years.

His heroics on the footplate are there for us to cherish for ever via videos and dvd's.

My great sadness of this news is much the same as when I heard about the sudden death of another very fine steam man, Bryan Dudley-Ward and ironically, Bryan died around the Christmas festive season too.

I would like to send condolances to Paul family at this very sad time.

Paul Kane was clearly a supreme steam engineman and he will never be forgotten.

    RIP

    Nick

Shocking news and the Mainline Steam scene has lost a true friend, RIP

I have to say though, if you have to go then having an A4 blasting along the ECML as your last memory is a pretty good way.

    Hi Pat,
Unless he uses another name he does not appear to be on this forum, but someone may know who he is.
Sites like Flickr do not usually allow you to copy photos, so the only thing you can do is leave a comment on some of the photos and hope he sees them and gets back to you.
He also has a YouTube presence but has not used that for more than a year so leaving a message there is not going to do much good either.
Sorry cannot offer more help on this, but there must be others who will have photos of Paul.

Very sad news indeed, I was really sorry to read this.
I may just be an interested amateur, but have ridden on the "jacobite" for many years now, and have been very privileged to speak both with Paul and Frank Santrian too.
This year, I was invited by Paul for a footplate ride from Fort William to Mallaig, and it was an absolute pleasure. Paul was a true Gentleman, very genial, and enjoyed a good conversation and many laughs too. I will remember that trip for the rest of my life.

RIP Paul. Thank You for the many hours of pleasure you gave to many people.
Sincere condolences to Paul's Family too.

    Richard.

I would just like to thank everyone on behalf of myself and my two brothers Paul and David for all the best wishes that have being sent to us since Saturday.

We can`t believe how much people thought of our Dad.

Everything that has been said about him so far is true, mainly him being a bit of a `character`

All these comments keep us going and we love reading them.

    Many thanks to everyone.

    Paul, David and Mandy

As a passenger on the train I witnessed the very sad scenes at Stevenage on Saturday and would like to pass on my heartfelt condolences to Paul’s family and friends.

I would also like to register a note of sympathy to driver Peter Kirk who was clearly distressed at the situation and was doing everything he could to assist the medical professionals who were quickly on the scene, despite the weather. What happened must have been a terrible shock.

I am sure everybody who enjoys the delights of steam traction will have Paul in their minds at this time and the debt of thanks we owe him for his undoubted contribution to our movement.

    Nigel.

Although I was unfortunate not to have known Mr Kane, he was clearly a gentlemen of great fortitude and with many friends, who died doing something he loved. How perhaps we sometimes dare to wish it will be the same for us.

    Don't be dismayed at goodbyes.
A farewell is necessary before you can meet again.
And meeting again, after moments or lifetime,
is certain for those who are friends.

Whilst making an arse of some firing on the B1 on the West Highland extension Paul was the only one to lend a hand and give some sound advice. Probably cos we we're both Carlisle men. Anyway Wizzer and Mr Santrian wern't to chuffed at me throwing most of the coal around the cab instead of into the firehole, and what did go in ended up piled up underneath the door. Paul knowing full well I was useless did the only decent thing and blamed it all on the '****ty eastern region thingy' (bongo) and promptly dug me out of a hole and showed me how to do it properly. I have never forgotten.

    true gent

    Thanks Paul.

Just found another shot of Paul on Fotopic. http://trains-are-hell.photos.me.uk/p64298439.html

I have a lot of video from right behind the tender of 45407 (with 44871 leading) from Ayr to Stranraer which I will upload when I return home next week, another extremely memorable trip, the sound 45407 made racing away from Dunragit alone was immense. The whole run was fantastic with the main highlight undoubtedly been the climb away from Girvan.

Also I will see what other vids I have with Paul driving,I have the stuff from his retirement special on 13/07/02 so if I come across that I shall upload it also.

    Cheers,
    Mark

    Very sad news indeed.

My heart felt condolances go out to his family and friends.

The mainline steam scene has without any doubt lost a master of the trade.

    Rest in peace Paul.
