apparently a chain broke on the crane when 70012 was being unloaded at Newport docks, it dropped 30 feet and damaged a bogie at one end leaving it somewhat banana shaped. hope someone got a pic.

Dropped, apparently at one end, on arrival due to a crane failure. Even if it is a write-off i cant imagine it'll be scrapped anytime soon - probably not until its gone back to the factory.

Loco reported to have considerable damage. The good news .....it's not quite as ugly now. <BJ>

When I worked at United Heavy Transport (Sunters and Wynns), we had the job of transporting the one export order BREL got with the International Train - about 10 coaches to Ghana I think, certainly somewhere in Africa, from Derby to the Docks (Liverpool fro memory - this was over 20 years ago!). I was somewhat surprised to see documents for 10 one way late one week and 1 back at the start of the next.

Same thing had happened - 1 coach had been "dropped" at the docks! Presumably was replaced on the docks insurance.

More to the point, it seems very lucky the no one has been reported as being injured, or worse.

Not an expert, but cables store up the energy and so "whip", while chains just drop. I'm happier with a broken chain and a dropped loco than injured people from a broken cable

Hopefully there will be some "on the hook" engineering cover

From what I gather it fell back into the ships hold rather than onto the dockside so the repair bill could run to more than replacing the Ugly Betty. Thank goodness no one was hurt though.

Why didn't they just push it into the water (unnoticed) so that someone could find it in years to come and start a raise the "70" and restore fund? If I was to be the customer I'm not sure if I would want a repaired locomotive if I was paying for a new one. Perhaps they will dismantle it as parts for any future deliveries? Interesting speculation on the liability for the insurance claim. If it was a car most insurers would have to replace it with a new one, even if you hadn't bought the gap replacement policy.

Latest 'news' is that she was completely dropped, not just at one end, into the ships hold and is probably beyond repair.

    Oops.

I feel sorry for the ship which now has a Class 70-shaped dent in its hull.

That is a major "oopppsss......" moment, I wonder if that'll show up on u-tube or elsewhere?
I quite agree (poor ship), but on a serious note - glad no reported human injuries.....

They seem to have managed to keep it out of the news very adroitly so far. Must be subject to an HSE investigation though. AFAIK any failure of lifting gear is reportable?

I'm so glad my brain eventually caught up. I was thinking Ollie Cromwell and then the grey matter shuddered into life "aint that 70013? aint this the diesel section?" Hope the vile heap never comes back. Time we stopped wasting this countries financial resorces on foreign junk.

We really should be able to build something in the UK.

Didn't we invent railways, then ship them all over the world?
