Well here we go the first Mainline Steam tour of 2011. I expect plenty of the regulars

including myself will be out there to see 35028 giving another fine performance

    around The Surrey Hills.

Going to head to Gomshall with my Mum and Dad, will try and use Railtours Live as well for the first time, though do not normally get a signal at Gomshall on my phone.

If it's not chucking it down, I plan to go to Egham and then either Abinger Hammer or Ranmore Common. Weather forecast looks like it could be OK.

I'll send text updates in - will anyone else be doing the same?

PS Ashley, I found I had a good signal at Gomshall Station last time I was there, maybe you'll have better luck tomorrow.

If you are at or near Abinger Hanger you are welcome to join us at the Post Office Tea Rooms after. I'm the one that some people think is the Archbishop of Canterbury!

Managed to catch this at Abinger Hammer earlier. Looked and sounded excellent in the Winter sunshine. Nice way to start the new year.

I saw her at Lyne and Ranmore Common, looking very nice, videos not fantastic though so I'll wait for the trip on the 21st before uploading a combined video, I think.

I believe the correct form of address is, "Your Grace", LOL!

And it would be nice to see Don's photo from yesterday here. Superb shot, IMHO. Yes, it would be nice to see it Grace this Forum, (groan, sorry).

And here's one of 35028 I took not far from Gomshall. Between Pirbight Junction and MP31.

Few years ago though. Probably 1962. And I would guess a Sunday as it's on the local line. Unusual for a main line train to Bournemouth.

My video from Guildford and Chilworth is on Youtube now. I have let the clip run on 20 seconds at the end as the young child on the up platform shouts 'that was the best train ever' after Clan Line had been through, a new steam enthusiast!

Also my Mum and Dad who I was with yesterday have put there videos on youtube, my Mum got a camcorder for christmas so last night was spent setting her up on the computer and the world of youtube!

Ashley: given that on the second clip, at Chilworth, your camera position looks to be quite near the platform edge, do you stand to one side, or actually behind the camera? Just curious, not critical! Lovely shots and sound.

Does anyone happen to know the actual weight of this train, must be substantial. Two Mk2's, ten pullmans, a Mk1, and the 67.

Thats fine! I stand to one side, the right in this case as I focus on still photography mainly. The video is just an extra, it is on a tripod and left there! Normally I prefer to be further back, ideally lineside somewhere so its train in the countryside however my Mum and Dad did not fancy getting muddy so we chose Chilworth and I had to be fairly close to the edge to see along past the buildings! The tripod was on or around where the yellow line would be on most station platforms. You can see me actually in my Mums video as she was further down the platform behind me. Clan Line is just passing me on the up platform as the video starts... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mts8JWB0Lug

As for the weight I don't know but it is a heavy train and Clan Line has no help from the 67 at the rear.

I'd be curious about that too. Whatever it is I get the slight impression that '28 doesn't appear to be taking the full load - I'm sure that 67 is putting a bit of power down, which is more than fair enough on a gradient like that. Willing to be proven wrong, mind.

I was at Chilworth too with my Dad. He decided to take me out to see 35028 as I haven't been very well over the last week. Seeing 35028 in fine form was certainly a good tonic! I also heard the child making that remark. His father asked us how we knew about all the steam trips and we told him about UKsteam so I guess he will be taking his son out a bit more for steam specials.
