Ok I will look into this, seems as there is a rogue loop in the system, after having 15 different accounts registered to test the system, I never has that problem! Typical.

There was a little cockup on the promotional text message I have just sent out.
The word Array was meant to be your name, so sorry about that.

I have given up trying to log into this, tried on numerous occasions but no joy, seems like a good system if you can get into it!

Just to let you know when you click on the link to UK steam from the railtours tab, after you have signed in, to find out the code to subscribe for a tour it still links to 2010's tours not 2011. It is easy to find 2011 from that page though.

    Hi All

I'm posting this because I have been helping test the Twitter feed from RailTour Live (it's really good!), and wanted to let you know my experience and get some reactions to help Glyn decide what to do about it.

I used it on Saturday, when the VSOE tour was running with Clan Line.

In a nutshell, it works like this:
    - All the texts into RailTour Live get fed in automatically to be tweets from RailTourLive on Twitter
    - As a Twitter user, you can request to be a follower of RailTourLive. Those followers approved can see all the tweets from RTL (ie all the text updates) via the Twitter application free of charge.
    - The tweets are set up so that so only followers approved by Glyn can receive them
    - As a Twitter user, you then have the option to get Twitter to text you all the tweets from RailTourLive to your mobile. These texts are free of charge. Or you can receive the tweets in a mobile Twitter app.

So, put succinctly, via Twitter you can receive all text updates to RTL immediately and without subscribing to a specific tour.

On Saturday, I both subscribed to the VSOE tour as normal and followed RTL via Twitter and via Twitter-texts to my mobile.

    What happened was this:
    - I received the text updates sent by other people for the VSOE tour as normal
    - I also received them immediately (a few seconds later) via the Twitter-texts
    - In addition, via Twitter I received update texts from other tours that I was not subscribed to - on Saturday, a diesel tour through Wales
    - Also, via Twitter, I received back my own text updates sent in to RTL for the VSOE tour

So, in summary, the Twitter feed enabled me to receive all update texts to RTL without paying a charge per text.

I really liked it, and it seems to me to have the following advantages over the current system:
    - you can see more than one tour at once
    - you don't pay per text
    - you don't have to "start" and "stop" tours - you get to see all received update texts, for all tours, in real time, without choosing between them

Of course, the final point has a potential disadvantage for some, in that on busy days, you'd receive updates from tours you had no interest in!

Now, looking at it from Glyn's point of view, it has one big problem - which it seems to me may also apply to the future GPS-based tracking. You are not being charged per update. So how does he make it commercially viable for himself and for NatPres?

My own thoughts have been to pay a monthly, quarterly or yearly subscription for the Twitter feed, if you want it. As an alternative to the "per update" subscriptions on the present system. It does not replace that, but gives you an alternative.

I would certainly pay a few pounds a month to be able to follow RTL on Twitter. What do other people think?

For a monthly subscription you will get access to the following.

    A full Twitter feed located @ http://twitter.com/railtourlive
Access to the GPS systems for your chosen tour.

The GPS tracking will be available in a mobile phone size format.

The above services will require you to have an internet connection to your mobile, and you must have a smart phone.

The monthly subscriptions will be taken from the balance of their account on the first monday of the month,
If the balance will not cover it, your subscription will be terminated.

The full terms will be up soon.

The GPS systems does depend on the development side of things.

This may not be 100% true for Twitter. You can do the Twitter set up on your home PC, and on there you can choose the option to have the RTL tweets forwarded to your mobile as texts. If you did it this way then it would work on any phone, not just smartphones. You would get the update texts sent from Twitter, though obviously you would not be able to use a "dumbphone" to see the GPS feed while out and about.

I have a live demo link you can use and have a look at.

    https://www.railtour-live.co.uk/login/gps.php

Currently it is tracking a demonstration GPS Tracking device.
You will notice, you have the speed in kph, Approximate location of the tracker, and the history of the tour.

Have a look at let me know what you think,

It looks nice. One improvement for me would be if the Google maps widget were made live, so you could switch between satellite and map views, zoom out, etc.

Now I have a working system, I can adjust it to how it's needed.

This will cost in excess of £8000 Per year. SO therefore, the MAP will not longer feature within the Premium section.
However, I have made a lot of development, so I will possibly make the map available free of charge to members.

Regular SMS messages with details on the speed of the tour and approx location.
Informative logs from the history of the tour.
Twitter feed to a device of your choosing.

I have made the following changes to the system.

Now the SMS message you receive will either be from RTlive rather then NatPres if it is an update
And the tour code will be displayed on updates rather then NatPres

    Cheers
