No, that's a standard boiler lift. I can't see a problem with it.

I,d be concerned about it getting a swing on the thing, becoming unstable, and sliding off. Still if its done carefully ok then.

As a crane driver, i would rather see nylon strops used instead of chains - better grip etc.

Looking productive! Assuming that no 'nasties' are discovered what sort of timescale are we looking at before 6233 will be back, or is it too early to speculate?

Of late there is always someone popping up on this thread saying that something is dangerous!

Everything is dangerous.. If you look at it life is a sexually transmitted, terminal disease. Now that's dangerous. But good to see lots going on with the Duchess.

Sorry, dangerous was probably the wrong word. I agree with 69621 nylon strops would have been preferable

I understand they are aiming to have her back before 6201 has to be taken out of service for her overhaul.

I got the latest magazine of the 6201 Society yesterday. On their list of tours for 2011, PMR Tours will be using 6201 twice:
    Derby to Scarborough & return.
    Crewe to Carlisle & return.

A problem with most boiler lifts is that the centre of gravity is usually very close to the firebox throatplate, making it difficult to get a spread on the slings. It's even worse when you lift without the tubes or smokebox. Agree that nylon strops would be better but, at the angle of those chains, the chances of them coming kissing together are minimal.

. I can see your point about the nylon straps and grip etc but the steam crane ( cowan sheldons 75 ton steam crane I think ) in the picture was the norm in steam days and as far as I know they didnt have many problems when lifting hence the people at PRCLT trusted the said machine using chains for the lift . Having had some contact with PRCLT I'm sure that the method used for lifting the boiler, had had a full risk assessment before it took place, those involved were fully qualified and did everything by the book.
However this is supposed to be a thread on the overhaul of 6233, so can we keep it that way please. :focus:
