Well I think the thought of a guards van with a good warm fire could persuade me but I was thinking of some of the less agile of the gang trying to clamber in the cab. On reflection any sort of transport to get to the extremities of the line would be welcome.

Has there been any talk yet of when the next steam Gala will be happening in 2011 ? Sadly, I missed the opening Gala and the Diesel one in March is not my thing.

    Hello one and all.

This is my first post on NP but as a very long time reader of this thread I thought it was about time I stick my head out and say hello. Having visited the CVR from a relitavely young age and following its progression from its humble beginnings to how it is today has been great to see. And for some time ive followed the pictures in this thread/facebook/the official website and kept an eye on any news articles in the Sentinel etc. To the point also ive finding old aerial pictures and retracing the track as I didnt know its route. Id like to say what a fantastic job everyone involved in restoring the railway is doing, Ive read various articles on the CVR website too in regards to things such as the telecommunications and have been blown away by the effort and dedication shown.

Its really interesting now to see how the railway progresses, and when (im hoping its sooner rather than later) the CVR/MCR connect back to stoke and to leek and Alton Towers and become a vital tourist attraction as well as extremely efficent transport tool for the area. It can play a key role in the regeneration of Stoke On Trent and the Staffordshire Moorlands and I dont think it gets the celebration it deserves. The future connections with Alton Towers I think will become a massive boost for the local economies all long the stretch of the railway and create an entire new travel market for tourism for Staffordshire when people are able to combine air, train, theme park tickets in one package. Added to this the assistance in helping to not only allow people to journey through stunning countryside but also create an experience you certainly couldnt get in Florida.

Either way, I couldnt help but notice it seemed you may of needed help with the Pway gang. And although im not completely clued up on the lingo this is the permanent way gang? What sort of work do you guys do? And how do you get involved if help is needed?

Hello Ash, Welcome to NP, as you can tell by the postings there are 4 of the p way gang who post regularly here. It' certainly an exciting times on the CVR at the moment. We are presently doing maintenance on the track keeping on top of jobs that need doing on a regular basis e.g. line walks, jacking and packing sleepers and generally replacing any parts on the permant way that may be getting life expired. The big job at the moment is moving the points and bringing the loop at Cauldon back into use. Then in early March we should be starting the big push to Stoke and hopefully within the year have trains running in this section. If you want to get involved with the p way just letme know by dropping your phone no. into my private message box. Look forward to hearing from you Jeff.

At the moment, we do not have a steam gala planned for this year. But you never know, one could be slotted in to our events list at short notice.

Its been down for quite a while. All I can assume is its been revamped? Most of its content was no longer applicable anymore anyway.

Seems odd given the immense success of the last one. I'm sure it was a huge drain on resources but even so a smaller scale gala this Autumn would be well attended, even if you didn't use the MCR extension.

Im sure something Will happen this year. never known a railway not have a steam gala for the entire year. plus while the stoke line is not operational the mcr surely need some income so using the extension would make sense. haven't seen how much profit was made from the gala but Im sure it paid for having the locomotives bought in by road.

Well, had a busy day yesterday, 2 of the group went measuring rails north of Bradnop, which were originaly missed as we could not get to them because of trees ,bushes and water. They then came up to Cauldon where we had the mini digger uncovering the buried points on the bridge. It took longer than we thought as it could not work on the bridge as it is in a poor state of repair, so a lot of had digging was needed. There are also cables going over the bridge which are vital to Tarmac so great care had to be taken of these. The points were then lifted and packed ready for the road railer to come in and take them to the new position. All in all a good days work.

Hey Jim, I'm not that strong, the mini digger managed to push the rock that was in the middle of the tracks to one side, enough to clear the ends of the sleepers so that was ok. The bigger one which is on the end of the sleepers defeated us so will leave to this week when we should have the roadrailer to help us. Hope you will be down this week, we cleared out the weighbridge hut out so at least there is somewhere dry to have our snappin.

Great progress today with the removal of the 6 Ton boulder from trackside by the road railer. This was 1 of the 2 left over from the Thames barrier project, the other we moved last week. They can still be viewed from the train when it runs into Cauldon. With their removal the points on the road bridge could progress and these are now removed ready for renovation. 13 pway people turned up today so an assortment of other jobs were also done. The track plan has been ammended to incorporate a siding as well as the loop so work was done on this point. Hope the weather stays as mild as today.

Owwww I hurt! Why o why o why did all the blasted trees have to grow right next to rails, point rodding and ties? and why did they feel the need to push roots right through the middle of sleepers?
Got all this to look forwards to down the Stoke branch yet:frusty:

I'm not sure Ralph. Jeff (P/wayman) says above that they were left over from the Thames Barrier shipments.

I'd hazard a guess that they were there to prevent anything running onto the bridge, whose girders resemble a lace-doily. Across the other side, Tarmac's site roadway has been built up to approx 1m above rail level, so any reinstatement would need both a new bridge deck and some significant civil work on their side.
