Could I suggest Preston - Leeds ( Blackpool North - York hourly service ) then Leeds - Keighley electric service - less changing and could be quicker

Will all the locos be facing east? As they are top and tailing it might be nice if something faced west for the return trips.

Just noticed that the ticket price for this gala is only £5.50, with two guest locos that sounds like value to me!

Are these tours taking place at particular times, and do they have to be pre-booked? Very much looking forward to this gala!

Orange as apposed to yellow fluorescent hi viz vest/jacket, no need for hard hats.

3155 - Cheers for all your updates, much appreciated. I'm gonna go on Sunday (with an orange his vis now I've got one - why do railways have to be different to everyone else). Is there any age restrictions for the tour? Many thanks.

orange high viz is used as there is nothing on the line side that is orange if you wear a yellow vest it could easily be mistaken for a signal or flag signifying danger or caution

I think you'll probably find that everyone else is (was) different to railways, not the other way round, as railways were one of the first users of hi vis clothing.

I think the reason that orange was used on the railways was because it contrasts more with background vegetation etc than yellow, certainly in the days when a hi viz vest was simply made of coloured fabric rather than the more fluorescent materials with reflective strips available nowadays.

I agree I should have said that - according to wiki it was 1964 when experiments started with hi vis on railways. That & the reasoning why orange & not yellow are my lesson for the day. Cheers.

I'll get the orange paint on my yellow one (or perhaps just borrow one), ...and hope that I don't end up stood next to a loadhaul liveried loco!

Picking up secondman about 6.15 in the morning here in sunny Cardiff....and hoping there's no wrong line working on the M50, as is sometimes the case....

Once again, thanks to 3155 for answering my question about the tours, it's very helpful for planning the day. I'm looking forward to visiting the RSR for the first time tomorrow with Tim - yes, we're going to Preston from Cardiff for the day (A 430 mile round trip - ooh 'eck!)! Do we win the prize for tomorrow's furthest travelled gala visitors, or can anyone else beat 215 miles each way for a day trip by car to the Ribble Steam Railway Winter Gala?! Hehe!
