The other driver was Mick Kelly.
We ran fairly well to time to Buxton but from there we got held at Great Rocks Junc then again at Chinley I guess because the earlier delay then meant we had to wait for a service train to go ahead. From then on we did not have much opportunity to recover much time. The stop at Brighouse was was shortened by only Leander taking water as she had to get to Preston.
Various hill sides approaching Buxton were lined with photographers so I look forward to seeing their efforts.
Nice to meet Brian, Peter and Marks Dad, sorry you name escapes me.... Look forward to seeing you out again sometime.

[Same old story on the return in that we had beautiful light above Cowburn tunnel at the time the double head should have paased us.Delayed out onto the main line because of a very slow moving freight, then local unit, by the time 5690+44871 came the light had gone.

A quick video from the pair crossing Brighouse Viaduct running considerably late. Was a nice way to end the day after a long day on the ELR.

The delay from Great Rocks was caused by the 14:01 Peak Forest - Peterborough leaving the siding at 14:14 and the signing on point at 14:19 whilst the steam locos were standing at Great Rocks. Although the steam passed the box at 14:35 [its booked time] had the steam been given priority there could have been a better result. Was this poor signalling or slow crew change ?

Staniers doubleheading to Buxton 26 February 2011

A two-month absence of main line steam in the north was ended by the return of the two Stanier 4-6-0 thoroughbreds from the Riley and Beet stables, Black Five No 44871 and Jubilee No 5690 Leander, for a climb to Buxton and a meander round the hills and dales of Derbyshire and Yorkshire with the Buxton Spa Express.

Leander brought the train from Lancaster to the water stop at Eccles, where No 44871 was added. The pair made a prompt and smart start up Miles Platting bank, quickly attaining 20 mph and accelerating to 27 mph by the junction. We dawdled around to Stockport where we began the climb to Buxton. We attained 46 mph just after Whaley Bridge and speed dropped only slowly as we tackled the 1 in 60/70/58. We were still doing 30 through Chapel en le Frith, 29 as we entered Eaves tunnel and 24 as we topped the summit at Doveholes, an excellent climb on a damp rail.

After a break at Buxton, we proceeded onto ex-Midland metals through the dales and past the quarries. A freight was sent out ahead of us at Peak Forest so we lost our path from Chinley East Junction. Eventually we pulled out strongly towards Sheffield but were quickly checked to 12 mph by another signal. When this cleared we got smartly away up the 1 in 100, entering Cowburn Tunnel at 27 mph. We rattled down through Sheffield to the water stop at Brightside.

Then it was through industrial Yorkshire past Wakefield and Mirfield to the water stop at Brighouse. A lively run through the Calder Valley followed, and we reached our first 60 of the day at Middleton Junction. I left the train at Manchester Victoria after an enjoyable day.

Nice one Oli, I believe the hills were alive with the sound of camera shutters....

Thanks Mark must replace my brains memory chip, it seems to be fading these days.

Cheers for that info Fred, that's one problem on board, we know we are held up, but the reason is not always obvious.

Brian, nice to meet you and have a chat, yes got home OK, just made my train back to Warrington, it was already in the platform as we drew in.

Thanks for the report Brian, more than I could have done as you had the details.

Except for the one significant delay it seemed to go well, a bit of time was saved at Brighouse by only watering Leander, 44871 hopefully had enough to get back to Bury.

There did seem to be a lot of people about linesiding yesterday. Here is my video from Astley and Furness Vale. I expected the train to be working hard through here on the climb towards Chapel and Dove Holes but it was held at the signal for a good few minutes outside the station.

Thanks to all those involved in running yesterdays tour, Neil.

There were certainly vast numbers of linesiders out yesterday! Must have been well over 200 at Peak Forest with a similar number at Great Rocks. Even with the abysmal weather there were 30 or so alongside me at Barmoor Clough Tunnel in the morning.

My humble video effort is here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTfzP7zElqY - I went out principally for the still shots but the sound effects were so good I had to capture it all on video too!

Nice video Andrew. Shame about the guys talking in the background in your shot at the tunnel! Had they really been waiting four hours, I wonder?!

My video from near Combs and Edale.

You can see me in your second shot in the field Phil, you found a good spot on the hill side. I was originally on the hill the otherside but was too windy so I came down again. Its a shame I didn't know about the 20mph TSR just round the corner.

Thanks Ralph for comment on my pic, much appreciated. Never seen so many people at one location for a mainline railtour before. People standing on walls that consequently collapsed, others getting caught on styles. All sorts mate!!

Superb videos of this tour, but from a "noise" point of view it is no contest, Mr Riley's very loud Black 5, against the softer "double-three" of the Jubilee. Only found one video so far where I can even hear the Jub!
Thanks to all for sharing your videos.

Some superb videos and photos so far. We were going to head to the Peak District for a day out Saturday and walk around the National Trust land at the Longshaw Estate but after the heavy rain decided it probably was not the best weather for walking so went to a location near my fiancee's house, Moorthorpe. Not the most attractive locations and with the tour 40 mins late by then getting a little dark but I have put a photo and my video up...
