Aren't locos that haul the VSOE Airbraked. 35028,4472, 6024, 60163, 6233 etc though 6233,6024, 60163 and when its back 4472 have vaccum brakes as well.

The point in question is whether the loco itself is air braked instead of steam or vacuum, irrespective of being fitted with air brake equipment for train operation.

Great pictures. I have a bias for the Balcombe Viaduct one as I go over it 3 times a week and is only just outside Haywards Heath.

Looking at your video surely that leaking steam on the drivers side has got to cause problems for the drivers view of signals?
I was down at Old Dilton and echo the fact that had it been on time the sun would have been great. I heard the preceding Portsmouth train stopped on the bridge over the avoiding line to remove "logs" from the track put there by kids seen running away. There were also problems before that so increased the lateness at Westbury

Looking at the videos & reading the comments on here, it looks as if the box was shoving hard all day. Hark at it in the last part of alts1985 video above. How many times have steam locos climbed Upton Scudamore unassisted it the past? Feel sorry for the punters who lashed out good money for that! As I have said before, that is why my main line steam trips have finished.

On a positive note, I thought it quite appropriate that Tangmere should pass through Bath this month. In BR steam days, Tangmere had worked
over the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway between Bath and Bournemouth. The line closed to passenger traffic 45 years ago this month. <BJ>

Your entitled to your view, but i doubt the vast majority of the people on the train would have preferred the likely alternatives. Please remember, a thread was specifically started for people to have a moan about diesels on steam trips, precisely so the same discussion doesnt have to be had in every other thread.

Had buseng read the earlier part of this thread he'd know that the "box" was pushing because Tangmere had a genuine mechanical problem. Had the diesel not been there and the train failed, delays and cancellations would have arisen and RTC would have been fined, perhaps at a considerable loss to them. Especially if this happened on the return journey, the punters would have been sat in a loop somewhere waiting for a diesel to come and rescue them even later into the night, so I'm sure they would prefer to get home quicker and have a diesel on the back. I'm sure that if Tangmere had no problems, the diesel would have been shut off or at notch 1 the whole time, but because there was a problem it did its job admirably in getting WCRC, RTC and the movement out of a lot of trouble.

On a brighter note it looks as though Tangmere is OK as she's replacing 70000 on the Cheshireman on the 2nd April and going all the way up to Cleepthorpes and back.

Rather late in the day I appreciate, but I've got some photos / a video of the tour myself which I thought I'd share.

    Photos here

    Video here

As to the issue of the diesel on the back it didn't seem to be shoving by Shoreham, although perhaps this was more due to the lack of significant gradients along the coast? There are a couple of decent (albeit short) climbs around Hassocks associated with the Downs I believe.

Cracking weather to be out for though!
