What is the current state of affair with CVR locos? The MPD part of the website hasn't been updated in quite a while.

What seems like the current state of affairs:
    5197 - Awaiting overhaul
6046 - Under restoration - any progress or projected completion date?
8173 - Awaiting restoration - dismantled, I believe. Is it still to be restored with that Fowler tender?
92134 - Under restoration off site at Crewe. Is this still intended to be a CVR loco? Any progress or projected completion date? http://www.cvr-extra.wanadoo.co.uk/92134.htm identifies a return to steam date of 2007, which has been missed by some distance. How much is left to be done?

This is shaping up to be quite a strong fleet in a few years time. Ideal locos for tackling Caulden Lowe excursions. How will the curves affect these loco's long wheelbases?

68030 - is this still a CVR loco or permanently relocated?
    44422 - Ditto?

5197 - Outside the shed at Cheddleton awaiting the completion of 6046
6046 - Under overhaul, hopefully complete within 12months depending upon other work commitments
8173 - Dismantled in Cheddleton yard. Parts regularly being aquired though, and work will start once both Yanks are running.
92134 - No idea. 9Fs are banned from Cauldon Lowe branch due to the curvature of the line though.
68030 - On hire to Strathspey think?
44422 - Owning Group have sent it on hire to Nene Valley. May return one day, all depends what the owners decide.
5199 is also on hire from the 5199 Project Group until the end of 2011, though this maybe increased depending upon other commitments.

80136 ought to have been on the list as well, but I suspect it won't be returning to the CVR. I expect it to return to the West Somerset, taking the place of 5553 when that engine's ticket runs out.

A second tender was acquired so I would expect that one would be used instead as I believe it has a higher water capacity (which can be a limiting factor to Cauldon Lowe operations!)

what restrictions are there on 8 coupled wheelbases? 9fs are banned from Caulden lowe, but how will 8173, 6046 and 5197 fare? How did it go on 8624's chassis?

It will be interesting to see how the CVR home-based fleet shapes up - At the moment it stands at 2 USATCs and a long term 8F and doesn't look that healthy to me, particularly as all are owned by the same person, I believe. Shades of the Mid Hants there! I think they'll have to hope 5199 stays!

don't forget 92134, 44422 and 68030, if they're still intended as CVR locos.

There are a fair few of 5199s supporters that would like to see her stay for a bit longer. CVR have been very supportive and helpful with her when required, and she has proved popular with the crews as well. She goes back to Llan for SSS3 and a repaint next year, after that its up to 5199s board. Even though Llan is her home and always will be, at the moment there is Jessie, 44806, 5643, 80072, 3802 and 6430 all competing for steamings with 7822 due to return imminently. So there wont be as many steamings for her at Llan as there is at CVR. Shall have to wait and see what decisions are made for her though.

I think it was established earlier in the thread that 44422 is unikely to be, and probably not 68030 or 80136 either (I think the latter two are basically under the same ownership). As for 92134, we'll see but it's a big engine, expensive to maintain and I would suggest is probably too much for what the CVR needs. It's owner has intimated in the press that he'd like to see it run at he NYMR, and if enough miles could be found for its a home where more sensible use could be made of it.

Well its a good point but if all goes ahead as planned with the mcr the railway Will have a 30 mile Route. So Will need many more locos. I don't know how they Will manage to get groups to go down. But Im sure if the price is right they Will get some locos.

The problem I see is that in doing so they're potentially harming another railway. Before anyone picks me up on this, arguably the NYMR has done that to Butterley, with 53809 and 92214 moving on; the MHR has also acquired various locos from a range of sites in recent years so, yes, it does happen. I thought 48624 might have made its home at Cheddleton, and the alternative choice of the Ecclesbourne Valley was a surprise to me, so it the decision was clearly not a no-brainer. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, does end up based there.

I think once the MCR's mainline connection at Stoke comes into play then there could be a few more locos on site, allbeit maybe on short term deals in between mainline commitments. Also as Gave mentioned, with the current CVR line expanding to both Leek and Alton Towers there will be a need for more locos with the increase in services. Certainly going to be interesting to see how things pan out.

I had always been under the impression that there was a strong relationship with LNWR at Crewe. Pete Waterman's engines (and the one he sponsored the restoration of) seemed to be frequent visitors which doesn't happen much. LNWR manage 68030 and 80136 on behalf of the owners (my interpretation of the current circumstances). There were certainly offers put in for 80136 elsewhere but I don't expect it to go back to the CVR.

I'll have to get down there and see her then. Have now moved into the area so should be able to justify a trip to the CVR

    Hi Guys

I don't normal do standard gauge posts, as I am more into the narrow gauge stuff.

But you asked what locos will be based at the CVR, do you mind if I ask is there any North Stafford kit about? If not why not take a look around the World (South Africa comes to mind) to see why you could not get another NBR dubs tank loco to rebuild for the CVR?

    DUBS Tank

I am sure there must be something out there that you can get your hands on for rebuilding as a kit of parts to be rebuilt on the lines of the old railway company?

I don't know what type of locos the old N.S.R had but that could be a long term aim for a group to undertake.

    Regards

    Colin

There's some impressive kit in South Africa, worth restoring here (or there) in its own right.
if SA locos could be regauged to standard, how far is it off in dimensions ?

Imagine a GMAM garatt in the UK in steam, I couldn't imagine a better place for it than the CVR, if it would fit and regauging wouldnt make it lose it's appearance.
