DMU available from scrapman

Reposted from WNXX - a damaged, but seemingly very restorable 115 has been sold by the Barry railway to the scrapman EMR, who would like to see it saved. Im sure there must be several railways who'd be interested.

I have just been told that the three-car class 115 from the Barry Railway has been bought by scrap dealers EMR.

The three vehicles are believed to be

and were in reasonable condition when last seen.

EMR are willing to sell these, either individually or as a job lot. They can't be stolen as the price of scrap is so high at the moment but EMR are keen to have them preserved. There are also some DMU bogies but no info as yet as to what they are from.

The set is still at Barry but is due to go to the yard within the next week, if a quick sale can be agreed transport could be direct to the new owners.

PS Is there anyone in the area who can identify what the bogies are from? They are currently "in the bushes" I am told.

The bogies are from class 101 and are all with final drives. One has had the sliding dog etc taken out and used to repair another unit.

I live local to this set (1 street over) unfortunatly I would not be able to identify what bogies they are.

As for the DMU set it has has heat damage from a fire last year, the appear to of damaged paint work on the 2nd mans side of the lead car around the first window area and cab door, altough no glass was broken due to the heat, there could well be a little somke damage (smell) inside. the unit is proberbly very damp inside as during the winter there were several drop light left open and the van doors left open. This set has worked in preservation. I can get some pictures of the damage side from a public place if anyone wants some

Buying it is the easy part.. question is... is there a home for it.

 

looks like its just been painted! and the interior looks like it was good to. What I cannot understand is why was it left with windows open? had it just been abandoned by everybody on the railway?

I have been speaking to the scrap man and to other parties.

I can confirm the DMU is still available, the price for all three direct from scrap man is £17500 plus VAT the guide or starting price for the two power cars via CAR Services is £9500 each plus VAT.

I can find you a home.....the problem is having a group willing to get it back up to scratch and keep it that way. If that group is out there, I'd like to hear from them, because the home is actually not an issue.

 

It seems criminal that resored stock is sold for scrap, when it must have value to heritage railways, especially the more recent start-ups with little current motive power or stock.

Was this DMU properly advertisied for sale anywhere before being sold for scrap? Are there any websites used for advertising heritage rail stock for sale (or wanted)? If not, could this forum have a "for sale/wanted" category to create greater awareness of surplus stock, to avoid risk of scrappage? With heritage rolling stock and motive power owned by hundreds of different groups and individuals, surely there's need for such a 'marketplace' (maybe there is one and I just don't know it, though I haven't been able to find anything like that through a Google search).
