Looks like Tangmere may have issues as I've just been told that 44871 is now running this one.

Re: 1z31 Tangmere to Chester 2nd April (Via Standedge now)?

I am sure that there has been a huge effort going on behind the scenes to sort Tangmere out in time for this trip and there will be a number of people booked on specifically because it was Tangmere over the Pennines. I am sure that those involved have had an extremely hard decision to make as to whether to run the trip with an alternative steam loco which luckily is available at such short notice or postpone to a later date.

Many passengers will have already made travel and accomodation arrangements for the weekend for this trip. To postpone at two days notice when an alternative steam loco has been made available would not be acceptable to many people either.

    Neil.

I agree with you, but surely the attraction was Tangmere, and I have nothing against 44871

Re: 1z31 Tangmere to Chester 2nd April (Via Standedge now)?

Well I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to break silence on this one, and say well done! Credit should be given where credit is due, as I have always maintained. If I had been allowed to book on this tour - and it is one that would have interested me as I have a very soft spot for Spam cans - I would have been livid to have lost out again, but could not possibly complain given the context of the change. This is completely different than ringing the changes months in advance, for no more justifiable reason than gricing overcoming reality at the promotion stage.

This is exactly the sort of occurrence that exclusion clauses are meant to cover. Tangmere ran a full itinerary earlier in the week, so why it is now a problem in regard to a movement only forty eight hours later we don't know, and shouldn't speculate on. At the fifty ninth minute of the eleventh hour another team are working like blazes to get a substitute loco out - and all power to them.

Given the exotic start location there will be many who will have made travel, and accommodation arrangements to suit, and as Neil says - many would not be cancellable. One must wonder though if any further problem were to now arise, and 4871 for some reason were not to be available - and I am in no way suggesting that - whether mechanical failure insurance should be considered as good practice and a reasonable precaution against failure to provide steam haulage on the day after, now, a third change in motive power.

Neither the promoter, nor the TOC, could do more to provide steam on the day than they have, but given the harsh attitude towards the paying customer declared in some parts, I have to say that reasonable precautions to protect client interests in the retail leisure industry are only fair, and would also be a resort for the promoter, as insurance proceeds would allow them to make a gesture to disgruntled passengers, as some already do completely voluntarily, when things go wrong - without adverse effects on their cash flow.

Ian Riley says no box all day just 44871. Last year 44871 lifted 11 coaches out of Sheffield on the 1/100 without difficulty. The grand daddy of all Bill Andrew was on the reigns !

What a wonderful attitude you have.:rolleyes1: :censored:

There are a lot of hard working folk burning the midnight oil on this one. We are all disappointed that Tangmere has a problem. Mr. Rileys black 5 will "attend" to the Huddersfield to Marsden bit, (fasten everything down on Huddersfield station), should sound good echoing round the valley.

With main line steam into the 21st century that is a risk anyone making a booking has to accept and take.

Ony a few years ago I took my late wife to Hamburg to experience a trip behind three cylinder pacific 012 100-4. Return flights plus hotels rooms booked. I was wandering around the Hbf the evening before and met one of the loco crew getting off a service train from Hannover: "Sorry Bryan, but she's just failed on her way up here with a hot box on the trailing axle. It will be an electric loco tomorrow".

That was about the only time I made one of my frequent trips to Hamburg to travel behind that loco and was met by a failure.

But it happens and has to be accepted.

At least in this instance a replacement steam loco has been made available.

I see that according to UKSteam the Ashton water stop has been moves to Victoria, someone did listen to Uncle Frank.:thumb: But that 44871 is coming off at Brightside on the return.
Visit to Miles Platting now cancelled, Black 5 up there, happens regularly, but it would have been worth a visit to see how Tangmere coped.
