In the latest steam railway it says 2500 is being looked at as being returned to steam and to mainline standards to go from York to Scarborough. Is this an April fool. I would love it to happen as its a great loco. And Im sure would be very popular. I can just see a lms gala with this. Any word from nrm? Cheers Gav

On a similar vein I have seen on another forum that the NRM are organising a dinner to raise funds for the restoration of 34051. Again don't know if this is genuine or not. If it is will it a cosmetic restoration or to full working order?

34051 is a cosmetic restoration only, afaik, buseng. It's been mentioned before.

Back OT ;) , if true, it would be nice to see 2500 in steam again, & I too would think that it would be very popular - except, of course, for the poor soul who has to oil up the middle engine if no suitable pit is available...

I read my copy of SR last night, and the only story I could say was a poss. for 1/4/11 was this one. Looks like it.

Either that of they did a Truro and painted 6023 Blue !

Just suspending my disbelief for a second: with 2000 gallons and 3.5 Tonnes coal, how far could 2500 run ? Presumably it would need a Bristolian style 'GUV with tanks' to Get to (say)Scarboroug/ Shildon
I Note with interest the the ideas about improving access and servicing facilities in the South Yard NRM. Given the amount of Steam traffic through york a water column on one of the platforms would be quite useful.....

I remember 2500 as a runner at Bressingham many years ago. Would be nice to see her working again, April Fool or not.

It does say in the article that it would need a water carrier.

Thinking a 6 wheel milk tank, a coal wagon and a parcels van (spares and a fork lift truck) would set off the train nicely...

But the Standard 4 tanks that have ventured out onto the big railway seemed to manage OK - they have similar water & coal capacities, don't they?

I can't see a water column at York being likely, nice idea though it might be, given the lethal nature of the electric string suspended above the running lines...

I have it on good authority that this is not an April fool spoof, but is a goer subject to funds

But IF it is true (which would massively surprise me)

What was the SR april fools...?

Unless the goal was to report something quite unbelievable that was true to fool people and make them think it was untrue...?

I hope that this is true, as it is a lovely locomotive with beautiful lines that I would delight in seeing out and about.

Whilst we're talking about water carriers, it surprises me that as yet these are not carried 'as standard' in a GUV or BG (which of course looks pleasantly prototypical) on most railtours. The deceleration, stop and acceleration, and finding locations for refills, not to mention the expense of getting tankers in, is a hindrance to mainline operation. Furthermore, with a water carrier the locomotive owner could remain in complete control of the water entering the locomotive, enabling Porta treatment or similar, which is a massive cost-saver in corrosion.

One reason may be whether a worthwhile amount of water can be carried in one of these vehicles - they weren't designed to carry large amounts of dense material. Plus, it's an extra non-revenue earning vehicle in the train so reducing the payload.

I have also heard from a reliable source that the NRM is indeed considering returning 2500 to steam. I will certainley put my hand in my pocket and donate.

Hopefully some people might also like to throw a few groats in Shannon's direction too...

Sorry Anthony - limit on funds means only one project can be supported but if 2500 is the NRM's confirmed next restoration there could be a few quid winging it's way to York !

I'd much rather they did 2500 than Hamilton.

Plans to restore Shannon to working order? I live just 9 miles from her original Potton home so would love to see her run again and would gladly chip in some shekels.

    2500 running? Yes please.
A practical sized loco (ignoring any water issues) which can run on mainline and preserved lines without people moaning 'It's too big'
