Yes it was a pdf (£3.00 per copy) for both autumn diesel and steam galas last year; diesel proceeds going to D5032 restoration and steam proceeds to 80135 restoration I think.

You were emailed a link via email once you had paid; link was only valid for short period of time so you had to save it quickly.

Still cutting it fine though; wonder what is replacing Salmon in the roster?

Apparently the brochure went to the printers today.
I called in at Pickering today to see if any copies were available yet as I hope to have them at York Model railway show on the NYMR info stand over Easter.

Our web maintainer is looking at the link - I think what we did was give the lik in advance but still supply a hard copy, so you could print on normal paper a working copy and keep the brocuhure in good condition. Not sure it would be ready foer the printer today - still under debate when I left mid-afternoon!

One of the special features of the event is highlighted here - very rare opportunity:

Latest news; but I imagine there is now little chance of getting the brochure through your letter box prior to the event starting; therefore no chance of knowing what locos are operating each day etc.

    Hope I am wrong........

Incidentally; £5 to park; so make sure you have plenty of change; although you do get a £1.50 voucher to spend in the tea rooms if you spend over £5.

One thing which I don't think has been publically confirmed previously is the visit of Beamish's NER Clerestory Brake - normally based at Tanfield at present, which will be running with 69023.

I think this will be the first chance to travel on a "normal" NER coach over an NER Railway in preservation - we have two surviving NER Saloons ("The Old Gentleman's" and the Beet family's) but no NER ordinary service stock. It is hoped to run this train also including the Thompson CL, which is currently having paintwork and associated bodywork attention at Pickering.

Therefore it isn't going to be possible to work out on which days the diesels are working! So it isn't possible to decide when to book a B&B. Think I'll give this one a miss.

    Sorry

I was planning to visit over the weekend of 6-8 May, so that is a turn off. I think I'll find something else to do over the weekend, there'll be plenty around.

I really don't understand why the NYMR has done this. It has taken its SSG, renamed it, and then turned it into a mixed traction gala. It already has a mixed traction gala scheduled during the year - called the sixties weekend. Why didn't it use that as the basis for its NYMR 175 event?

It's an expensive business for me to go to the NYMR. Last year's SSG cost me around £450 and with the increase in petrol prices I could expect a visit this year to be a lot more. For me, this event just isn't good value, so I'll stay away.

    Sorry for any offence caused.

Think you will find the diesel services to be as little or less than when D6700 made a guest appearance at a steam gala a couple of years ago.

Can't say for definite but, according to the train crew rosters, there is a diesel turn on the 3rd and the 5th May (not the 6th). Over the 6-8th May there should be 10-11 locos in steam each day, if all goes to plan (and that's a big 'if'!), including five Black 5's on the 6th. Only two on the 7th & 8th, though. Even when the diesels are out, they don't really do much.

The NYMR has an hourly service, because of track capacity constraints it's the most it can do. If it runs one diesel train a day there is one return path lost, if it runs two then there is two hourly return paths lost. I'm not going to spend £450+ on a weekend and hang about while the diesels pass, sorry.

The railways have specific markets: the general public, which wants steam; the steam enthusiast, who wants steam; the diesel enthusiast who wants diesels; and the general railway enthusiast who is content with anything! The SSGs and ASGs are directed at the first two of these markets, and the railways should beware of alienating them, of taking them for granted and especially of adopting a 'take-it-or-leave-it' attitude.

By changing the nature of this year's SSG the NYMR is getting perilously close to taking the steam community for granted. I don't like being taken for granted especially when my attendance at these events costs me a lot of money. I shall stay away. There's lots to do elsewhere, which will cost a lot less and be better value.

    Regards

Orion - I can confirm that there is no scheduled Diesel usage 6th to 8th May.

The only planned diesel usage is 3rd and 5th and includes a single passenger journey double-heading with steam (a not unknown genuine occurance) and one single journey diesel only.

The loco planned for use uis D5061, which is a similar type to what BR used and also represents sister loco D5032, which played a major part in the NYMR story. Its use is for these reason, not to annoy steam enthusiasts or show any form of contempt.

Most lines will have diesel available if something goes wrong but we have tried everything to minimise their usage - in Spring last year, the Class 24 took a train up the bank and then swapped with the incoming steam loco to keep diesel haulage to 7 miles. Firing back from Pickering on a tender full of dust proved an interesting experience for the crew and a similuated hail-storm for the passengers!

MY GOD!!!!!!!!! 2 "TWO" return trains that might have diesel haulage out of nearly 100 return workings over the 10 day gala event (not including all the local shuttles, freights, replica's etc.)!!!!!!! What sort of an event is this!!!!! You complain that you don't want to hang around and watch a diesel pass, well don't, buy a ticket for the train and ride on the steam hauled ones instead, that way you'll miss the diesel runs altogether. I realise visiting these events cost a lot of money (i spent that amount visiting the WSR gala) and everyone wants to get value for money but the theme for the event is Whitby to Pickering 175 and whether you or anyone else likes it diesels were a part of those 175 years.

In the grand scheme of things this isn't really too bad is it?? Even with 2 return diesel workings there could still be 10 steam hauled trains up the bank from Grosmont to Goathland, more trains than some railways can manage at a gala, something that needs to be remembered.

It is after all the 175th anniversary of the railway and diesels did play their part, both at the end of the lines BR ownership and in the embryonic days of the NYMR, as Steven says, without D5032 there might not be an NYMR today (a fact i think should be remembered, as well as celebrated, something we are doing with the running of D5061). OK so this is mainly a steam gala aimed at the steam enthusiast and the generally steam wishing general public but we can't re-write history, and a 175th gala without any diesel would be doing just that.

Heres whats planned to run each day (of course this will be subject to change should locos fail, and if they do a diesel will only be substituted as a very very last resort)

Thanks for that. With the apparent absence of a working timetable being available in advamce, that's just what we need, except can you let us know whether all of the listed locos are rostered on passenger trains each day or will one (or more) be purely on goods trains (as often happens at NYMR galas).

The above was from the Great Central last year.

On a more serious note the NYMR Spring event looks like it will be a great event from all I've seen and wish all involved well with it.
